Belize city, capital of Honduras, under martial law after devastating hurricane. At least 62 people died as floods and wreckage swept through the city. Two U.S. Navy destroyers reported Belize 85 percent destroyed with widespread damage to buildings.
The hurricane hammered Belize and Honduras with 20 foot waves, 100 foot tides, and heavy flooding. Officials report enormous property damage, 99 dead and many missing as looting and chaos followed the disaster. Aid ships with food and medical supplies move toward the affected area.
Former director of Commonwealth Serum Laboratories Dr. P. Bazeley left Sydney for overseas tonight and would not state the reasons. It is understood he may take a job with a large American chemical firm after being demoted by the Public Service Board for criticizing government lab legislation. Officials in Melbourne knew nothing of his trip. his wife confirmed departure.
A thunderstorm dumped eighty five points of rain yesterday at 3 p.m. Canberra Meteorological Station described it as moderate with a temperature drop from 69 to ST degrees. The day peaked at 64.2 degrees at 2 p.m. and fell to a low around 14.8 degrees after 4:58 a.m. Winds gusted up to M% mph at 3:20 p.m. Clearing showers and cooler conditions are forecast for tomorrow.

Paris and Algiers reports say French forces tested nerve gas bombs during Algerian protests on the seventh anniversary of the war. The Daily Mirror cites choking gas and sickness among demonstrators and security casualties, while officials claim only 60 of 1100 towns were affected.
The Public Service Board found Brown guilty of improper use of Commonwealth vehicles and betraying trust as Queensland Director of Posts and Telegraphs. Prime Minister Menzies announced immediate removal and demotion to a fourth class engineer in Melbourne with a salary cut from £3,650 to £2,278 annually. Brown had been suspended on September 27 after earlier charges in 1961.
Three officers from the Department of Works at Tennant Creek were sacked after a Commonwealth Police and departmental inquiry found misuse of Commonwealth cars and falsified documents. Leo Parker, 32, was dismissed on September 11 for misconduct, and the minister ordered the inquiry. Arthur Spring Robert Hutchins Cyril O Conner and Parker appealed, with a board to hear Parker’s appeal in Tennant Creek next week.
Defence Minister Giulia Andreotti said Rome hopes to launch its first earth satellite in roughly 18 months. The craft would study cosmic rays and meteorological phenomena, to be launched from a platform built in international waters between the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
