Khrushchev threatens rockets over US bomber over Soviet border

Khrushchev told the Parliament that a U S plane was shot down over Soviet territory and warned of retaliation. He questioned who ordered the mission and said the downed craft appeared American with marks erased. The State Department had no protest on file as Parliament debated the incident.

Jaycees to Hold Stats Talks at State Conference

Delegates arrive for the 10th State Conference of the NSW Junior Chambers of Commerce in Canberra. National Library to Be Separated in Australia plan

Acting Prime Minister McEwen announced in the House that legislation will separate the National Library from the Parliamentary Library. A National Library Council will be appointed interim, with design work for a Canberra building to begin, and ministerial review of annual expenditure.

Two Men Drown in Sydney Harbour Skiff Capsize

Two elderly men drowned when a fishing skiff overturned in strong winds off Rose Bay Sydney Harbour. The craft capsized a short distance from shore. a crash boat reached the scene but both men were dead. Police had not released the victims' names.

Big Gun removal moves forward to War Memorial

Waterfront conference set for Saturday in Sydney

Sydney hosts a waterfront conference called by Mr. Jane Ashburner with representatives from the W W F, A C T U and ship owners after federal minister McMahon intervened in the dispute. The W W F previously ordered a 24 hour nationwide stoppage over a £500 fine. Eight hundred tally clerks planned to return to work as pay clerks arranged wages for watersiders.

Canberra Chamber protest against phone tapping move

The Canberra Chamber of Commerce Council last night voted to protest any move to legalise phone tapping. A council member said phone tapping would be an imposition on individual freedom.

Phone Tapping Bill Introduced

The bill replaces old processes and allows the Security Service to record and listen to telephone conversations with warrants from the Attorney-General. Interception requires a directorate request, with 24 hour emergency tapping allowed, six month warrant validity, and reauthorization for continuance. Penalties for unauthorized tapping are heavy. The measure aims to protect privacy while enabling security work.
