About 12,000 people lined streets Saturday afternoon to watch a parade as the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh relaxed and fished in the Snowy Mountains. They will return to Canberra this morning for Jubilee celebrations.
The Queen and Duke return to Canberra for a five week Australian tour. More than 4,000 marchers and 49 floats took part in the Jubilee parade watched by Lord De L Isle and the Canberra celebration committee. Police restricted traffic along the Royal Progress route and 17,000 schoolchildren expected to see the Queen.
Diagrams show the royal progress starting at Fair Bairne Aerodrome at 12.05 p.m. and a tour through Civic Centre at 4 p.m. The schedule lists route steps and timings for public viewing.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh toured the Geehi tunnel on the Snowy Mountains scheme this weekend. They were escorted by A R McIntyre and J Redpath to view the nine mile tunnel planned to divert Snowy River water from east to west.
The British Australian Minister for External Affairs Sir Garfield Barwick announced a £2 million aid package to India. The funds include £820,000 for FN rifles and ammunition and £205,000 for 303 rifles, with gifts of blankets clothing and wool worth £300,000.
Former Australian Foreign Minister Lord Casey urged better coordination of United Nations assistance agencies. Arriving in Sydney from New York after leading Australia’s delegation to a Geneva UN conference, he cited delays in aid reaching needy nations and said reform was needed to speed relief.
An 82-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Morrison, drew attention as she rode side-saddle in the Jubilee procession. She saluted Governor General Lord De L’Isle and Prime Minister Menzies, with the 90-year-old saddle given in 1902. Heat felled many riders, but she remained cheerful at the finish.
Manila hosts Malayan and Indonesian officials in critical talks over Malaysia federation demands. Prime Minister Razak reports public backing for Malaysia, while Macapagal urges joint Philippines Indonesian Malayan discussions on Borneo status and self determination.
The Sunday Telegraph reports that the Pope disclosed a Holy Office file on himself a postcard greeting from a priest friend. Angelo Roncalli, later Pope John XXIII, was once suspected of heresy and watched by the Holy Office for associations with excommunicated Ernesto Bounaiuti and reformist currents.
Rings and watches worth 3864 pounds were stolen from a Carlton shop at the corner of Lygon and Grattan Streets in Melbourne. Police say the entry was gained between 5.30 and 8.00 a.m. by smashing a plate glass door with two bricks. The shop is owned by former champion cyclist Nino Borsari.
The Met reached 601,262. Invalid pensioners rose to 101,370, with age or invalid pensions totaling 702,632. Widows pension holders fell to 58,103 from 58,713. Child endowment paid to 3,437,450 children. minister Roberton predicted expenditures would surpass 34 million next year.
Nearly £10 in cash and jewellery were stolen from the room of Mrs. Marshall Field wife of a Chicago newspaper publisher at the Manhattan Hotel. The theft is part of a wave of hotel burglaries in the area netting thieves about £450 000 in recent months.
