Belinda crowned Miss Charity after beating four finalists chosen from 26 entrants. The win caps hundreds of hours of fundraising for charity, part of Canberra Jubilee celebrations. Belinda receives 200 pounds and a gold watch. Barbara Cos eck wins Miss Charity with 50 pounds and a gold watch.
Melbourne Friday reports General Motors Holden will ramp expansion spending by 33 million pounds immediately and later add 150 million more, lifting total expansion since 1948 to over 90 million. The plan enlarges facilities to raise Holden output to 175000 yearly.
Canberra posted one of its coldest days in recent winters with a minimum of 38.9 degrees, about 12 degrees below average. A high of 64.7 degrees followed, seven degrees below normal, with expectations of a fine and mild day ahead and another low high around 74 degrees.

It uses a Mark 44 torpedo carried aloft by a rocket to strike submarines.
