The 50th anniversary of Canberra’s founding and naming on June 12, 1913 begins today. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will arrive on Monday to take part in festivities, with over 1,000 marchers and about 50 floats slated for a large anniversary parade tomorrow.
Canberra marks Jubilee Week with more than 30 events led by the Jubilee Citizens' Celebrations Committee chaired by T W W Pye. The parade starts 1.45 pm with a police escort and Canberra City Band, featuring the Jubilee Princess and finalists, floats from Regatta Point to Commonwealth Avenue, and a post parade Jubilee Fair in Civic Square chaired by Viscount de L Isle and accompanied by his daughter Catherine Sidner.
The Canberra Day Jubilee offers an art exhibition at Civic Square from 9 am to 5 pm and 7 pm to 9:40 pm by the Artists' Society. Band recitals run 7 pm to 9 pm in Garema Place Kingston and Manuka lawn with R A F Central Band and Canberra City Band. The Gipsy Baron at Albert Hall features John Germain and Myra Law with the Philharmonic Society tonight and tomorrow. Red Cross Ball at the Rex Canberra Hotel crowns the Jubilee Princess.
The Prime Minister Mr. Menzies met yesterday with the appointed committee to inquire into the economy. Attending were chairman Mr. K. B. Myer Dr. J. Vernon Sir John Crawford Professor P. H. Karmel and Mr. D. G. Molesworth with Menzies himself among seated members.
President Kennedy said the United States would demand a test ban treaty that guarantees detection of clandestine Soviet tests. He defended current NATO commitments and noted progress in European talks led by Livingston Merchant. He avoided fixed on site inspection numbers while stressing deterrence and a multilateral option if Europe supports it.
A factory explosion in Norwich Connecticut followed flooding from a dam burst. The floodwaters toppled a boiler causing a three story factory wing to collapse and at least four people were killed.
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will spend an additional 15 minutes at the Australian War Memorial on Tuesday to inspect galleries updated since 1954. Public access is restricted during the visit, but observers may watch a wreath ceremony before entry.

Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister G M Pushkin accused Western powers of blocking the South East Asian Communist bloc and the PRC North Korea and North Vietnam from ECAFE. He warned the exclusion harms half of Asia and keeps them from participating. Australia denied knowledge of Asian efforts to block its bid for area membership as voices warn of a “Commonwealth Club” dominating ECAFE.
