Calls to revise penalties for assaults on women in Crimes Act

The debate centered on the Acts giving committal for offenders and penalties up to five years. Retired magistrates Jessis Debenham and L McNamara urged harsher penalties as the existing six months jail or £20 fine from 1901 is seen as inadequate for assaults on females. Downing noted Section 494 allows up to six months or £20, while Section 497 lets magistrates refer to indictment and committal for trial.
