President Kennedy said American forces would stay in Germany as long as needed during a 10 day European trip arriving at Wahn airport near Bonn. He addressed cheering crowds stating your liberty is our liberty and an attack on your soil is an attack on our own.
President Kennedy arrives for a four day visit to Bonn Frankfurt Wiesbaden and West Berlin with police deployed in force and armored security. He meets Chancellor Adenauer and German leaders as he outlines a common stance against poverty hunger and disease and emphasizes alliance unity and mutual defense.
In his first message to the world since election Pope Paul VI pledges to continue Pope John XXIII’s work. He reaffirmed liberal policies, urged unity through the Ecumenical Council, pressed world peace and aid to underdeveloped nations, and expressed cautious optimism about relations with Communist states. He prayed at Pope John’s tomb and later had a minor car mishap near Rome.
Australian authorities examine a six page pamphlet titled Peace Spies circulated in Brisbane and Sydney. It mirrors a British pamphlet by Spies for Peace and claims to list secret government locations for use in a nuclear war. No names are printed and officials consider possible government action.
Soviet Premier Krushchev greeted Valentina Tereshkova and cosmonaut Bykovsky in Moscow after their space flight. Troops and crowds cheered as Tereshkova, 26, and Bykovsky, 28, received Hero titles and the Order of Lenin. Tereshkova thanked Krushchev for his support and noted Soviet women will no longer be considered weaker in space.
The Australian Treasurer Mr Holt said the forthcoming budget would be a prosperity budget fair to all, with defence expenditure rising substantially. He noted the royal name for the decimal currency was not popular but chosen for serviceability, not popularity.
Police scoured bushland and rivers for Monica Schofield after her disappearance from the Heathcote Migrant Hostel. Detectives and search teams examined bloodstained clothing and rope, while a helicopter, water police, and a CBC unit helped in the effort. A car and a man matching a witnessed description were sought as possible leads.
Alan Robert Swan 18 of 3 Federal Street Queanbeyan died when a car overturned about 13 miles from Canberra. Four others suffered minor injuries. two Canberra youths were admitted to Community Hospital after a Red Hill crash at 3 40 am. An ambulance at Commonwealth Avenue collision injured Gordon Freak Murry 17 Lyneham and Wolfgang Maas 20 O Connor. Ambulance driver Noel Bryant Webster of Dickson was in a second collision with a Metropolitan Security Services van driven by Joseph Konrad of Watson.
