President Kennedy opened a four day West European visit with a pledge to defend Europe with American nuclear power if required or desired. About two million Germans greeted him in Bonn as he met Chancellor Adenauer for talks on European unity and NATO nuclear power.
Carnival Air President Kennedy arrives in Europe with Britain Ireland and Maly on the 10 day swing. Massive crowds cheer in Bonn and Cologne with fireworks police bands and open car waves while observers compare turnout to de Gaulle's welcome last year. Kennedy meets Adenauer attends a dinner and pledges U S resolve in a NATO era facing East–West talks planned in Moscow.
Alkimos ran aground on the West Australian coast while being towed to Hong Kong. Attempts to refloat were abandoned until spring after a final bid to haul the ship off Eglinton Rocks, 25 miles north of Perth, failed. Pacific Reserve tug was towing the vessel.
Sydney report says Peter van Dyke and his two children Anthony II and Renee were trapped for 15 hours on a 150 ft cliff near Kiama at Minnamurra Falls. Rescue led by Sergeant G Godfrey and Constable T Edgerton brought them to safety in frigid air after night spent beside a fire.
A group of 44 British forces members from Aden entered Yemeni Lahej State during an adventure training trip. Twenty two were captured after being pinned down in a dry river bed. Four were killed and two wounded. The rest returned to Aden by RAF planes. negotiations continue for the return of the bodies and evacuees.
Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, may undertake a world tour soon according to Western observers. No official announcement has been made, but more appearances in the Soviet Union are planned following her reception in Moscow. She will be chief guest at the opening of the World Congress of Women in the Kremlin Palace. About 1,000 delegates from 119 countries attend the five day congress where Premier Krushchev may speak. Mrs Krushchev is among 50 Soviet delegates.
After a Cabinet meeting the Tunku postponed a London journey to seek clarity on merger terms for Singapore into the Malaysian Federation. He will send a delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Razak and Finance Minister Ta Siew Sin to explore terms before final decision.
The United States Defense Department announced an inquiry found no American military personnel involved in the Profumo scandal. The New York Journal American claimed two Air Force sergeants were recalled to Washington for questioning about the British probe. A Pentagon spokesman declined further comment.
Australian Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies and British PM Harold Macmillan met at Admiralty House to discuss international political and trading issues. Menzies stayed as Macmillan hosted him, after Macmillan returned from Chequers.
Melbourne report notes Gordon Lewins resigns after 25 years as State Secretary of the Painters Union amid a widening split over Russia China policy loyalties. Other union leaders including P Malone and C L O Shea oppose the pro Krushchev Liberal line. Lewins refused internal interference and said his union must not become a battleground. The Guardian had suspended J Lewins from the party last week.
Prime Minister Holyoake announced Professor E G Sayers of Otago Medical School will head a team of Australian teaching physicians on a six week post graduate medicine course in Singapore. The program is a joint Australia New Zealand Colombo Plan project at the Singapore University.
A spokesman said former President Herbert Hoover continued to improve from anaemia and an intestinal ailment as of Monday, according to United Press International.
The Foreign Office asked the Czech ambassador to recall Premysl Holan after Holan was accused of trying to persuade a member of the public to obtain secret information. Peter Thomas raised the matter in London and no link to the Profumo scandal was indicated.
