Vehicle Capsizes After Striking Crossing Sign

A motorist blinded by oncoming headlights struck a steel railway crossing sign near the Causeway and overturned in the early hours of Saturday. Sydney Leo Goggin of Oaks Estate was taken to hospital with a badly lacerated nose. Huge Boeing 707 lands safely after losing wheels

A Pan American Boeing 707 with 113 aboard lost two wheels on departure from Idlewild to London. After shedding fuel, the jet landed on the remaining wheels on a foam coated runway. No injuries were reported as passengers waited aboard and exited via chutes and ladders amid cheering crowds and dramatic scenes. Captain Somers praised the passengers and crew, while officials monitored the emergency.

Rural Lessees Appeal Fails at 1938 rent review

At the Rural Lessees Association monthly meeting Mr. F Southwell reported that Land Commissioner Dr J Murray had found no reduction in rent for block 50 Belconnen. The decision keeps the rental at 13/9 per acre per annum for leases starting January 1, 1938.

Five Pilots Report Bright Lights Over Pacific Flight

Five Pan American and other pilots reported seeing extremely bright lights while flying near Honolulu on a San Francisco to Honolulu route. Captain Wilson said the lights approached at 21,000 feet, moved south, then vanished after about ten seconds, with sightings also noted by Captain Springer and Captain Gikelley. A spokesman and an aviation club leader offered divergent explanations, with one asserting flying saucer confirmations and space visitors.
