Geneva Talks Resume Raise Hopes for Berlin Settlement

Western and Soviet ministers resumed talks in Geneva amid cautious optimism for a Berlin settlement. Officials from Britain France Italy and West and East Germany arrived as Moscow reported no grounds for pessimism. Key questions include occupation rights Berlin interim status force levels and a German reunification forum. The talks also may address resuming disarmament talks at the UN and timing of a possible summit.

New TWU Management Forces Entry To Office

In Sydney this evening the new management committee of the Transport Workers' Union and rank and file members forcibly entered the union's trades hall office. Officials present included assistant secretary of the Federal branch Mr St Clancy and union official Mr P Warner-Bubb. State secretary Mr Barney Platt was absent, last seen away since late previous night. About 30 members of the new faction gathered outside the office around 7 pm, later joined by their leaders.

Night Gathering Ends With Forced Door Lock Incident

A gathering was inspected three times during the night. At about 9 30 an organiser and faction leader arrived and the office door lock was forced within minutes. About twenty people were present while ten others stood by Dickson Street windows guarding the entrance. A photographer followed as Mr Clancy appeared in trousers and shirt smiling, with Mr Warner-Tivbbe nearby and two transport tubes in tow.

Ten Men Trapped Deep in Broken Hill Mine

Grave fears rise as rescuers race to reach ten trapped miners 600 feet underground at Broken Hill. Authorities warn it may take days to drill and clear rock as crews struggle to access the rock face and determine if any lives remain. Two Dogs Safely Back From Space

Tass reports Russia launched a one stage rocket carrying two dogs last Friday and recovered both canines in good condition. Parachute descent brought them to Earth safely. One dog named Rosa survived the space flight.

Australia could boost migrant intake says minister

Australia can raise its annual migrant intake beyond 115000 if needed, said Minister for Migration Downer after overseas postings. He announced plans for a larger flow from Scandinavia and Germany, with reorganized recruitment and a target of 7000 migrants yearly from Scandinavia and a 25 percent rise in assisted and skilled migrants from Germany.

Police Clash With Pickets Over Italian Ship Roma

In Sydney water front clashes, more than 300 watersiders fought 100 police as two trucks attempted to unload provisions for the Roma. Several officers and demonstrators were injured. three men were arrested and two fined for offensive behavior. The Roma sailed for Singapore with under minimum meat cargo.

Second Defence Transfer To Begin To-morrow

Ninety-six RAAF personnel will move from Canberra to new housing in Milbourne to Salen starting tomorrow and continue for two weeks with moves every Wednesday Thursday and Friday. A further transfer of wife personnel begins August 19. The Interior Department said checks on key deliveries would occur at the central office. Only 12 personnel will move first as most have not yet arrived to inspect new housing.
