Budget Planning Starts Reductions In Sales Tax To Be Discussed

The Federal Ministry will discuss revisions to sales tax schedules as it prepares the 1959-60 Budget. A deficit is planned with a pension rise likely and industry urged tax relief on furniture. Payroll, income, and company taxes face pressure while depreciation allowances are sought. Holt will present the budget to the House of Representatives around August 12.

Island Hermit Gaoled For Vagrancy

A 24 year old man from Mackay was charged with vagrancy after being found living on Whit Sunday Island off North Queensland. Kevin William Doohin admitted having no money and expressed a wish to retire to a lonely island and live off the land. He arrived in Mackay by launch Has sack and was sentenced to one month in prison after police reports of primitive living conditions.

New Defence Move Starts On Monday

Defence Minister Townley announced a staged relocation of 60 positions across Defence Navy Army and Air Force departments to Canberra during July August and September. Housing is pre allotted and the program aims for a smooth transfer with a mid October completion and a further move planned for September 1960.

About 250 mine workers at Bellbird Colliery near Cessnock received dismissal notices after coal production ceased due to dangerous underground heating.

Petrol 10 to Raise Octane and Power in Australia

The changes will be announced later this month and take effect a few weeks afterward with no price rise. Standard grades rise from 74 to about 80 octane and premium from 80 to 85 or 86. Mr C H Naythall of the National Roads and Motorists Association notes standard fuels were 74 76 and super about 80, making 85 86 octane comparable to Britain’s premium. English cars in Australia may be imported with reduced compression ratios adjusted to the new fuel.

Seven F-100 squadrons moved from France to Britain and Germany

Paris authoritative sources said seven squadrons of F-100 fighter-bombers will relocate to Britain with two more heading to Germany. The transfer, tied to President De Gaulle's ban on stockpiling atomic weapons on French soil, should be finished by September 1.

Dual A.N.U. Post Offered to Sir John Crawford

Sir John Crawford is offered a dual A N U post including the chair of a new Department of Economics. He would also select staff for the economics department while continuing as secretary to the Department of Trade since 1950 and former director of the Commonwealth Bureau of Economics. The move entails a financial sacrifice from his current £6000 salary to the £5000 university post.

Sea Fox to Be Towed Free to Elcho Island

John Calvert, owner skipper of the yacht Sea Fox, will be towed to Elcho Island at no cost after the Navy Board agreed to Emu towing without salvage rights. Calvert cannot claim assistance from the Navy if the Sea Fox sinks. The yacht, moving at about two knots, fights flooding with pumps. If towed as planned, the Sea Fox should reach Elcho Island around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Private Home Building On Increase In 1959

A National Capital Development Commission spokesman says private home building is rising. 272 permits were issued in 1958 and 345 from Jan 1 to June 30 this year, with projections toward 700 for the year. The commission expects growth from the home building exhibition and plans 900 houses and 100 flats in 1959-60.
