Mikoyan May Discuss West Berlin During Washington Visit

Soviet minister Anastas Mikoyan arrived in New York and flew to Washington for a four or five day stay. He suggested a possible meeting with President Eisenhower but said no White House talks were arranged yet. Mikoyan spoke of no set agenda for Berlin crisis discussions and planned to tour American cities during his trip.

Fidel Castro Gains Momentum as Havana Eases

Fidel Castro neared Havana after a 25 month revolt led by the 32 year old rebel chief. Urrutia forces sought to restore order by arming volunteers who surrendered weapons, easing tension in the capital while Castro reviewed troops in Camaguey and prepared to arrive in Havana.

Europeans Hurt As Natives Riot In Belgian Congo

In Leopoldville a Catholic priest was knocked unconscious and 28 Europeans were injured in a native riot while stopping looting of businesses. Reports said other Europeans sought refuge in the Portuguese Embassy as disturbances continued and officials imposed a state of alert with a ban on meetings of more than five people.

Triple drowning tragedy at Gonn Crossing on Murray

Melbourne reports a triple drowning at Gonn Crossing on the New South Wales side of the Murray River. Thomas Jason and Vera of Carlton swam with their 13 year old granddaughter Lorraine Panesar. Lorraine struggled and her grandparents attempted a rescue but perished.

Refugees Arrive in Sydney From Reds Under World Council Aid

About 200 White Russian refugees reached Sydney today aboard the Anking. Two died en route from China to Australia, largely from Harbin and Manchuria, after boarding in Hong Kong. The World Council of Churches organized their flight from Communist rule amid huge crowds on the wharf.

Mystery submarine towed from Atlantic by Spanish fishing boats

Two Pasajes based fishing vessels report a derelict unmanned submarine estimated at 600 tons was sighted about 40 miles off Spain and towed toward Pasajes. A third ship has joined the tow as heavy seas may have snapped the line.

Peanut lodged in child's lung prompts long ambulance run

A two year old girl from Cabramurra swallowed a shelled peanut that lodged in her lung and required immediate surgery. She was first taken to Cooma Hospital but lacking equipment was transported 130 miles to Canberra Community Hospital where doctors successfully removed the peanut. The mother was unaware of how the peanuts were accessed and the father is abroad on an engineering course.
