Balloonists reach shore after 1800 mile sea drift in gondola

Britons aboard the balloon Small World landed at Crane Beach near Bridgetown after drifting about 1800 miles at sea following a failed radio, towing by a Barbados fishing boat. The crew 51-year-old skipper A B Biloart and son Timothy 22 and navigator Colin Mudie 32 with wife Rosemary 30 were greeted by thousands. They left Tenerife December 12 heading to the wind propelled cross Atlantic.

Consolidation of Road Taxes Sought

A NSW government move aims to merge all road taxes into one federal managed levy. Premier Cahill and Transport Minister Enticknap tell a deputation from the Combined Transport Committee that petrol oil registration and other duties would form a single levy. The funds would be distributed by the Commonwealth Government, with a likely federal premiers' conference on February 10.

Ten Injured In Car Collision At Frenchs Forest

SYDNEY Tuesday ten people including five children were injured when a utility collided at the intersection of Lady Wakehurst Drive and Stonesville Road. George Alfrea Stephenson 37 of Hargreave Park was admitted to Manly Hospital with a probable fractured skull and shock in serious condition. The five children in the back and the driver were thrown to the road as the vehicle overturned. A motorist and another occupant were dragged from the wrecked cabin. Bennett 54 and June 47 of West Richmond Victoria were uninjured.

Soviet Indoesian economic pact builds steel and farming capacity

Antara said the Soviet Union will help set up two steel plants with a capacity of 600000 tons annually and a 100000 ton superphosphate plant under a broad Indo Soviet agreement signed by Indonesian Premier Djuanda and Soviet Ambassador Volkov. The deal also plans 661 km of highways and mechanised rice farming units of 100000 hectares each, with Soviet equipment for the sulphur mine dressing.

Giant WWII Bomb Defused Near German Town

The 10 ft bomb found before Christmas near a dam, believed to be the largest in Germany since the war, was defused by two women experts with RAF and Duesseldorf ties. About 120 people evacuated as roads opened for access, with remote control fusing and police lines to the inn headquarters.

Trawler Hunter Fails to Locate Tug Amid Sea Rescue Efforts

The Eden trawler Hunter reported trouble off the New South Wales coast as a towline snapped from a 40 ton Fremantle tug bound for New Zealand. The unmanned tug drifted helplessly while the Inglis, towing a harbour barge, could not recover the tow. Coastal radio stations monitored the situation as the Hunter searched the area.
