Lakonia Fire Strands 600 Onboard 100 Believed Aboard
A Greek Line liner Lakonia caught fire on a Christmas cruise 150 miles north of Madeira. About 600 passengers and crew were aboard with 100 believed remaining on the ship. Rescue ships and aircraft searched the sea as lifeboats and rafts were deployed and survivors reported.

Holiday Refused For Milkmen
The Director-General of Health Major-General W D Refshauge declined a New Year holiday for Canberran milk vendors. He said regulations do not allow a holiday. A Milk Distributors Society spokesman said they asked after a December 4 meeting to start the holiday. If granted, vendors would double deliver on New Year’s Eve.

Police have scoured hundreds of miles toward Ivanhoe and the Victorian border since the Thursday shooting of Constables Howe and Hunter. Howe was buried with police honours at Woronora.
