In Nicosia Greek and Turkish communities clashed as political strife over Archbishop Makarios 13 point constitutional proposal intensified. Turks say the plan removes Turkish rights and lowers their status amid rising tensions.
Leaders Makarios and Koril Kutehuk urge calm and normal daily life as armed vigilante squads guard Greek and Turkish sectors. British forces restrict access to Nicosia Amagusta and Larnaca while Cypriot police exchange fire with Turkish civilians leaving several wounded and two teenage boys hurt. A Greek Cypriot minister’s car convoy was attacked by Turkish students near Passea school.

Sir Jack Hobbs aged 81 died in Hove Sussex after serious illness. His first class career spanned 40 years from W G Grace era to Sir Donald Bradman. Hobbs scored 67239 runs and 197 centuries, records he held until 1934. Prime Minister Robert Menzies paid tribute calling him modest and beloved. Bradman praised Hobbs as a magnificent cricketer with high ideals.
The 30 day mourning period for President Kennedy ended at sundown with memorials nationwide. A torch was carved from the grave at Arlington and carried to the Lincoln Memorial where thousands will light candles. President Johnson will participate in the ceremony.
A Cotter River Reserve spokesman says the weekend was the busiest of the season with many escaping heat at two pools. A Christmas pageant at St Luke's Church of England in Ybare drew many families from the parish last night. The story of Christ was written by Mrs L Stevenson wife of the St Peter's Church Vicar at Wongan Hills Western Australia. About 30 parishioners performed and the production was arranged by Mrs Noel Smith of Red Hill. The final tableau is to be repeated tomorrow night during Carols by Candlelight in front of Parliament House.
Three workmen were killed and four injured when a 12 inch pipe burst 300 feet underground at the Snowy Mountains project near Island Bend. Two men were buried under liquid concrete, the third waist deep, as rescuers freed six others. all four injured workers remained in serious condition at Cooma Hospital. The dead were Smail Mrazljak 31 Jere Cohanov 25 and Aurelio Mayoral 26. injured Mile Jurcevic 24 Douglas Nye 25 Van Belesken 26 and Mike Karpiniuk 46. The Utah Construction Company employees were preparing the last shift before Christmas break.
Mr. Barnes said no further surveying would occur until border clarifications with Indonesia are completed. He stressed joint cooperation, questioned Indonesian compliance, and noted the External Affairs and Defence Departments are examining a border survey row amid reports of episodes with Indonesian patrols.

Washington reports the Defence Department plans to shut four of eleven naval ship yards to cut costs. A decision may take a year and be reviewed by the White House, with action possibly delayed until after next November’s elections. Australia’s Adams class destroyers are built in the United States.
Dr Hewlett Johnson known as Britain's Red Dean has accepted an invitation to travel to Cuba with Mrs Johnson. They plan to fly on Boxing Day to attend the January 2 celebrations marking the fifth anniversary of the Castro regime. He retired last May after 32 years as Dean of Canterbury and will be 90 next month.
