The search for Lakonia survivors continues as rescue ships bring hundreds to port. The U S Air Force reports 919 people saved from the burning liner with first arrivals in Funchal Madeira offering clues to the fire’s cause.
A Christmas cruise liner 180 miles north of Madeira caught fire and sank quickly. Survivors totaled 19 per U S Air Force Rescue Service with 24 dead and 135 unaccounted for from 1036 aboard. Salvage and rescue operations continued with ships, aircraft, and tugs aiding in the hunt for survivors and bodies.

Former Australian Defence Minister Athol Townley died after a period of ill health. A state funeral will be held in Hobart with a 2 p.m. service at Hobart Baptist Church attended by the Governor General Viscount De L Isle and Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies. Townley had just been named ambassador to the United States and collapsed in Melbourne. He served in parliament for Denison since 1949 and faced prior hospitalisations for heart and pneumonia. The Prime Minister and colleagues lamented his loss.
About 500 youths from two left wing groups rallied near the US Embassy in Jakarta. Police formed a cordon around the compound, dispersed two groups of demonstrators with gunfire, and blocked traffic, leaving no injuries or damage reported. The protest opposed plans to send Seventh Fleet ships into the Indian Ocean.
Demand for transport surged as Canberra residents left for Christmas. TAA added three extra flights to Sydney on top of six daily, while many drove to Sydney and Melbourne. The rush began last Friday, with crowds departing the city and rail and air services strained to cope.
Spokesmen for two carriers report all scheduled flights fully booked with high holiday demand. An extra flight to Sydney was added as officials note busy Christmas travel, with both carriers agreeing traffic is heavy.
