Pope Paul will travel to the Holy Land in January marking the first papal departure from Italy in 160 years. The Vatican also announced radical reforms of worship at the conclusion of the second Vatican Ecumenical Council session.
Vatican announces permanent bishop powers after Rome permission scheme ends. Pope Paul II plans the first reigning Pontiff air trip to the Holy Land, longest papal visit on record, while Ecumenical Council adjourns to September. Decrees on liturgy and media ethics release as council tackles church reforms.
After a hot dry spell Canberra faces record consumption. Cotter pumping station struggles to keep up as reservoir stores at Canberra and surrounds drop. New pumps due in two weeks. Citizens asked to water lawns only evenings 7 to 10 pm and reduce domestic use.
A mob of more than 200 white men, women and children attacked about 30 coloured fishermen as they attempted to salvage three dolphins taken by nets. The crowd on shore and in the sea fought with clubs and crowbars, following recent seal slaughter in False Bay. The dolphins were finally released amid cheers.
Mr William Willis 70 arrives in Los Angeles from Western Samoa after his raft voyage was wrecked off Apia in a storm. He plans to retry the 12,000 mile Peru to Australia trek after an operation for a hernia. Also pictured is the British nuclear submarine Valiant launched at Harrow-in-Furness costing about 75 million pounds. The COMPAC cable link between Britain and Australia opened Tuesday.
A closing editorial on China’s National People’s Congress stresses self reliance and an independent economy. It notes prior Soviet pressure in 1960 and signals China’s aim to modernize with major industrial projects while agriculture improves and debts to the USSR remain payable by 1965.
A 17 year old Canberra youth, Robert Jenkins of Randell Street Dickson, was bitten by a tiger snake while snake hunting with two companions near Collector. He was rushed to Goulburn Base Hospital in serious condition and remained unconscious on admission. Doctors described his condition as serious later.
Toronto General Hospital bans tannic acid use in X ray procedures after a Canadian Medical Association Journal report links it to five deaths in a Hamilton Ontario hospital. The authors, Drs Hans Lucke Kenneth Hodge and Norman Patt, cite high suspicion of tannic acid causing liver damage.
Ronald Reay Mackay 57 principal of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology was found with 21 bullet wounds in his home. A 23-year-old man charged with the murder will appear in City Court. Police recovered a .22 rifle and two .32 pistols used in the shooting. Mackay served in the RAAF and held multiple educational and professional posts. His wife died in 1947. he leaves a son.
At the third Plain of Jars meeting General Kongle, Neutralist C in C, and General Singapo, Pathet Lao commander, could not agree on ceasefire conditions.
An Appeals Board under the City Leases Ordinance confirmed a reappraisal of £1120 for block 8 section 37 Griffith. the appellant Maurice Calfes did not attend. The board reserved decisions on three other appeals in Ainslie Forrest and related addresses.
