Premier Heffron announced that Totalisator Agency Board off course betting will begin in New South Wales from July 1 next year. The cabinet aims to have legislation ready for Parliament before Easter.
The cabinet approves the totalisator betting system as recommended by Justice Kinsella and plans a July 1 1964 start. A parliamentary caucus committee will study the legislation while some ministers hint at continued illegal betting in areas lacking totalisator facilities.
After counting finished yesterday the Liberal Country Party Coalition appeared set to hold a 22 seat majority in the House of Representatives. Brisbane Bowman voters favored the Government as counts showed Liberal needs 64.2 percent of DLP preferences. In Hume NSW Pettitt must secure 84.66 percent of Liberal and DLP preferences to defeat Fuller, with Pettitt's position stronger than midweek.
United States Army Colonel James Chenault was released unharmed in Caracas after eight days in captivity by communist terrorists. Simultaneously Juan de Dios Moncada, self styled supreme commander of the FALN, was captured by loyal forces last night.
The AP reports that a Security Council call for a world wide arms embargo against South Africa drew reactions as Portugal’s African territories loom. The US and Britain oppose broad punitive moves against Portugal, a NATO partner, ahead of council action.
Joel Olszewski and Vince Ryan share the top prize of £100000 with a £750 consolation and £250 in tickets. Olszewski, a Canberra Club bar manager, known as Joe Wella, returns to work while planning investment. Ryan, health department staffer, eyes a Japan trip. Olszewski fled Poland in 1949 after WWII detention by Nazis.
Two new pumps at Cotter Station would add three million gallons daily and raise output to over 24 million, but a 27 million gallon 24 hour total was recorded. Department urged citizens to curb wastage and water lawns in evenings 7 to 10 pm while new pumps were installed.
SYDNEY Thursday John Lysagit Aust Ltd will retrench 440 men from its Newcastle steel operat ions next year. These to be retrenched include 300 senior men 48 juniors and 4 tradesmen. The company will cease production as part of its Newcastle works and transfer this to Port Kembla. Directors said the company has been in touch with other Newcastle industries to help retrenched men find work with little delay. Production of certain sheet steel will be affected by the closure of one mechanical finish mill and one roughing mill with reductions in galvanising department and warehouse and adjustments to maintenance services.
Former England cricket great Sir John Hobbs is reported seriously ill at his Hove home in Sussex. He will be 81 on December 16 and is cared for by his daughter Mrs King. Hobbs played for England from 1907 to 1930 and captained the 1926 series against Australia, with 3636 Test runs including 12 centuries. First class career includes 197 centuries.
A 17 year old Canberra youth, Robert Jenkins of Randell Street Dickson, bitten by a tiger snake in Goulburn Base Hospital area, was discharged from hospital after a serious illness and returned home.
