Seven people, five adults and two children, clung to a rooftop near Blackall as floodwaters rose. R A A F helicopters failed to reach them before darkness, following a day of dramatic rescues that saved at least 36 others from floodbound homes including a six week old baby and a 70 year old man stranded for three days.
Air crews rescued seven people stranded on a Moombria Station roof as floodwaters widened across the Isisford Blackall region and along the Bulloo River. Corporal Hentschke lowered to save a baby, a 70-year-old man, and others as two helicopters plied the flood zone from Adavale Quilpie to Wilga and Isisford.
Survivors describe extreme exhaustion hunger and sunburn after the Polurrian foundered. A man was reportedly snatched by a shark as his wife watched while their children died of exposure and up to eleven others are believed drowned. Captain Peter Fenwicke and chief mate Harry Hoehle are named among the dead or missing.
Two men were rescued from a small dinghy 60 miles north west of Fremantle after abandoning their sinking crayboat Yadrankka 12 miles off shore. They failed to attract attention with four flares and a bucket fire and sought safety in the dinghy.
