Twenty nine crew rescued from the trading vessel Polurrian after a sea incident off Bougainville. Papua New Guinea marine superintendent Captain G. A. Harley said a search for additional survivors would continue tomorrow.
Survivors reported unknown losses aboard the 450-ton Polurrian bound for Rabaul with a 135 ft length. Captain Peter Fenwick of Rabaul and owners Bougainville Co. said about 30 crewmen were aboard. Rescue ships and planes searched 89 nautical miles north of Taiwan for nine missing Hai Hsiang crew after a list caused by rough seas.
A five vehicle collision on Commonwealth Avenue Saturday night involved two separate crashes with no injuries. In the first crash a car hit a stationary vehicle causing substantial damage. a police car parked to warn others was lightly struck as a motorist swerved. A man faces a DUI charge. Minor damage occurred in the second mishap.
Eight people stranded on three station homesteads rooftops amid rising floodwaters. RAAF rescues include a family on a hotel roof in Adavale after 24 hours. Aircraft from Townsville and Richmond base raced to Charleville for relief with inflatable dinghies and food.
