Mr Calwell urged a no confidence vote against the Government claiming its mandate is borrowed time. He said the government’s position is “time stolen from the Australian people” and pressed for a decisive parliamentary challenge.
In a packed House of Representatives Calwell criticised the Government on economy housing and education saying unemployment fell by only 4000 in 18 months while the economy remained stagnant. He accused policy failures of mortgaging households and failing to regulate foreign investment and defence policy.
In Adavale Queensland eleven flood victims shelter on a hotel roof as a Neptune helicopter drops food and a dinghy to them. Squadron Leader Ray Scott and Flight Lieutenant R M McIntosh lead a rescue mission to transport the rescued to safety in a Hercules aircraft.

Moscow reports the fourth unmanned moon rocket launched with Moon IV aboard the final stage functioning normally. Tass says the automatic station, weighing about 3128 pounds, is set to reach the moon in 34 days. Moon IV was launched from an orbiting space platform per Moscow Radio. The effort precedes manned lunar landings by the USSR and the United States.
The National Capital Development Commission will display Hughes as the first suburb in the new south west area in March. The exhibit will show WW houses roads kerbs gutters verges and landscaped verges while shops school mothercraft centre and community amenity buildings operate. House designs include government private enterprise and special types. A housing exhibition will precede the display featuring commission built and private enterprise homes. The south western suburbs are planned to house about 60 000 people over the next 10 to 15 years.
The Soviet Foreign Minister Ei Pushkin died at age 54. His death was announced by the Soviet news agency Tass.
