The Yeemen’s first home game at Yee Field featured a new air conditioned press box. It accommodates the press public address announcer radio and camera crews with seating for about 25.
A string of shootings in Rockdale Saturday night left Sgt. Reggie Mack dead after a scuffle with Constable Ollie Cook. Patrolman Dick Tuma was wounded and hospitalized in Temple. Obbie Mack, 30, was charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and jailed in Milam County. Bond set at 10,000 per count.
Patrick Klecka was elected president of the Marak 4-H Club at a Tuesday morning meeting. Other officers named include Margie Vanza, vice president, Margaret Ipule, secretary-treasurer, Rose Marie Tomek, council delegate, Elizabeth Hubnik, repeared, and Barbara Tomek, song leader. Mrs. Dorothy Vaculin is adult leader.
About 90 Cameron Quarterback Club members saw a film on the Cameron Rogers game and heard a scout report on the Elgin grid team. President Forrest Sapp announced total membership at 131 and said a Southwest Conference football highlights file will be shown next Monday night.
Buckholts resident Miss Jean Adams heard guineas alarm in her garage at noon Monday and armed with a single shot shotgun she killed two rattlesnakes. One carried ten rattles the other eight. She had been beating out a grass fire nearby when the snakes appeared.
Cameron unveils a new press box at its high school stadium, praised as one of the finest in Central Texas. Construction completed last week at the existing site, enhancing facilities for games and events.
The North Milam County United Fund budget and admission committee met Monday to select agencies for the 1961 budget including Girl Scouts Red Cross Boy Scouts Salvation Army Area Charities Cameron Public Library and the Texas United Fund. The panel will recommend nine national agencies share the budget with a tentative total easily met by local cooperation. The directors will meet next Monday to set drive dates and division chairs.
The Weatherman records a high of 96 and low of 59 for the past seven days in Cameron with no precipitation. No rain has fallen in September up to now.
Alcoa Rockdale Works announces Oct 1 promotions for M. Perry to Works Production Manager, S. A. Jones to Aluminum Chief Metallurgist, and R. D. Hornbeck to Assistant Carbon Plant Superintendent. Perry joined Alcoa in 1942 and has served in Rockdale since 1952. Jones began at Alcoa in Tennessee in 1948 and moved to Rockdale in 1952. Hornbeck arrived from Vancouver Works in 1949 and transferred to Rockdale in 1955.
Cameron students receive advanced degrees at Texas A and M College summer graduation. Billy Ralph Bates earns Master of Education, Billy Joe Yager earns Master of Science in Chemistry, Floyd R. Harley earns Master of Education, Jerald D. Wise receives Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Army PFC Wesley W. Miller, 23, son of Mr and Mrs George W. Miller of Cameron, took part with the 24th Infantry Division in Exercise Summer Shield in the Bavarian region of Germany. He serves as armorer in Company A of the division's 24th Medical Battalion in Augsburg. Miller entered the Army in October 1959 and arrived overseas last May. He is a 1955 Yee High School graduate who attended the University of Texas.
Cameron Yoemen travel to face the Elgin Wildcats for a 1-2 start to the season. Coaches weigh Woodum’s availability at quarterback with Fikes or Morgan expected to fill in if needed. Starting lineups list multiple players by weight for both teams.
The Cameron City Council reviewed police chief applications while approving a $265,111.71 city budget to take effect October 1. The budget increases salaries in the police department and funds four special projects including a 36 inch storm sewer and street paving. The council also declined a city lot sale and discussed an electrical ordinance while supporting downtown parking meters during Dollar Day.
L. T. Ward Jr received a two year suspended sentence in Judge C. D. Graham's court for burglary of the Blue Moon in 1959. Clarence Blaylock was sentenced to one year in the state penitentiary for theft of a pistol.
Mrs. Laura Massey former Sharp resident sister of the late Nick McBurnett Sr of Tracy died in Haskell Thursday and was buried in Plainview Saturday. Survived by two sons of Houston a brother Lee McBurnett a sister Mrs Charlie Britton both of Robstown a sister in law Mrs Nick McBurnett Sr two nephews Gelmer and Tas McBurnett and a niece Mrs Wavy Charles all of Tracy.
Milam County reports about 9000 bales harvested with total annual output forecast near 15000. Manager P W Davis notes steady quality while heavy August rains reduced early ginning. Dry weather in recent weeks has kept cotton ginning near continuous operation. Last year produced 17000 bales. No rain in September.
