Belton schools apply for a five million dollar federal grant to fund school building construction through the Economic Development Administration. The bill has cleared Congress but funds are not yet allocated. Texas would receive about fifty five million if funds are set aside.
Continental Telephone Co has filed a 59 percent rate increase with the Texas Public Utility Commission. If approved, Burnet business phone plans would rise from 18.50 to 29.36 dollars monthly, and residential rates would jump from 9.25 to 13.36 dollars per month.
Dawson Cooper of Our Land Our Lives criticized Lt Gen Shoemaker’s declaration that Fort Hood still needs more land. The Army plans continued efforts to acquire acreage after Congress rejected a $36.5 million request for 59,300 acres in Coryell County.
The Cameron Community Development Agency reports progress on many city projects including a new building at O J Thomas Park and removal of substandard houses. A W McCullin notes 73 houses removed, drainage work on 13th Street finished, with Green Addition and North Cameron projects planned, and a senior meal program expanding at the park center.
City inspector Edwin A. Bigbee warned residents in West Cameron and nearby Dutchtown to fix privies and hook to the new sewer system or face fines under the health ordinance. Officials noted low interest loans from Farmers Home Administration for bathroom installs. The council also approved a monthly sewer charge for all line service. A drainage survey from 12th to Santa Fe tracks awaits engineering cut sheets. Cameron city received a $17,372.14 state sales tax refund along with amounts for several nearby towns.
Shell Oil Co asks for an advisory committee to study how lignite mining would affect living conditions. County Judge Harden says the commission ers, Milano representatives, the sheriff, and the county attorney will join, with Texas A U to conduct the study and a college representative visiting Cameron in October. The court also weighs welfare space needs and a jail laundry shed, and discusses taxes, road funding, and fair assessments while reallocating 40 000 dollars from the general road and bridge fund to precincts.
The Heart O'Texas Goodwill Industries and the Heart O' Texas Council of Scouts held a kickoff at 7:30 p.m. September 14 at the Scout headquarters. The drive, set for Sunday November 7, covers 12 Central Texas counties with a goal of 30 000 bags of materials.
