W T Hanes notes a new consolidated district combining Curry with Belmena Walkers Creek and Vogelsang into Cameron. A 75 cent tax will be levied with no increase to fund schools. Election and staffing changes were announced at a Cameron School Board meeting.
Cameron Yoemen dominate Caldwell Hornets 33 0 scoring in the second third and fourth quarters. Key plays include Rosenberg 80 yard return negated by a clipping call and Batte 70 yard scamper. Final sequences end with Yoemen three TDs and added points, page eight.
Texas A&M coach Ray George focuses on building an effective passing attack during two a day sessions. With players nearing their last season weights, the emphasis shifts from conditioning to throwing catching and blocking as the team aims to balance the offense with last year’s running game.
Funeral services were held Friday September 14 1951 at First Baptist Church Milano for T M Johnson with Rev R L Lovell presiding. Burial followed in Milano Cemetery. Survivors include widow two sons L H Johnson Cameron Z T Johnson Gause daughter Mrs Mary Ferguson Houston. Pallbearers listed. Johnson family long time Milam County residents.
Victor Bermudez secretary of the Patriotic Council says Cameron and Milam County residents helped make the September celebration a standout success. Large crowds witnessed the event on South College street with orderly conduct and broad cooperation noted by organizers.
Captain Rudolph Michalka and wife announce the birth of their son Martin James on September 13 at St Edward Hospital. The eight pound three and a half ounce baby is the couple’s first child. Mother Gertrude Boedeker is the former Gertrude Boedeker. Grandparents are Frank Michalka and E H Boedeker.
Mrs N Y Hayes aged 74 is buried at Marlow Cemetery following a Sunday service at the Marlow Baptist Church. Interment was directed by Green Funeral Home. She died September 15 in St Edward Hospital after a short illness and leaves a daughter Mrs Jimmie Coward of Cameron and son Carlos Hayes of Pasco Washington among other relatives.
L. W. Smith reports 1.97 inches of rain in the city and surrounding area by 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Farmers and ranchers welcomed the moisture for pasture lands as showers spread generally across the state. Farmers visited the PMA office to arrange seeds and soil conservation needs for winter legumes and phosphate.
First Lieutenant Weldon Newquist has been appointed as Major and serves in the A T C Air Force in Great Falls Montana. He has seven years in the armed forces and is married to Patsy Reaves formerly of Cameron. weekend guests included Mr and Mrs Claude Robinson and Miss Claudell Robinson in Austin.
Sheriff and Mrs Carl Black mark their twenty fifth wedding anniversary by opening the county jail quarters to visitors from 2 PM onward on Sunday. They invite friends to tour the facility, request no gifts, and emphasize that visits will be the celebration.
The formal opening of the East Texas and Longview Chambers of Commerce new headquarters, costing about 200000 dollars, will be observed Friday September 28 with ceremonies. Mayor G A McCreight chairs the arranging committee and Mark Rodden welcomes civic leaders from across Texas. Funds beyond a 30000 dollar East Texas contribution were provided by the Longview Chamber to establish a permanent regional chamber home.
Mil ee am County Farm Bureau sets a meeting for Thursday September 20 at 7 30 p m in the District Court Room. Fred Bethea Rockdale district tax supervisor will speak on the new tractor gasoline tax refund law detailing its technicalities. Farmers and bureau members are urged to attend for vital information.
A degree team from San Andreas Lodge 170 in Cameron conferred a Master’s Degree on a member of Elgin Lodge during a Monday night ceremony in Elgin. About twenty five members of the local organization attended the service.
SFC Frank Zavrel, son of Mr and Mrs V L Zavrel of Cameron, is stationed at Fort Hood after returning from a 30 day furlough. He has ten years in service and served about 11 1/2 months in Korea, where he saw front line action. Zavrel told the Cameron Herald he was glad to be at Fort Hood. Elmer Gunn of San Marcos visited his parents over the weekend.
Local school election action aims to improve Cameron by voting on key schoolboard measures and candidate choices. The outcome will influence policies on curriculum, budget, and community programs across Cameron schools.
Cameron B squad opens the 1951 season against Temple B at Yoe High Athletic Field Thursday night September 20 at 7 30 led by coach Don Ross with a starting lineup featuring Absnaider Posey Reddehase Shuffield Matyas tik Zotz Rettig Cryer Warren Balhorn Heitmann and Heitmann listed as fullback.
The Lions Club viewed the film Tent City depicting Jewish refugees in the Holy Land at their Tuesday luncheon on September 18. Adolph Winfield arranged the showing with his Winfield Dry Goods Store. A. W. McCullin led the program and Frank Mitchell served as chair. The club thanked Mr. Winfield for securing the film.
Mr and Mrs B Offield spent Sunday at Trinity visiting the homes of Mr and Mrs J W Henderson and Mr and Mrs Joe Denton.
Mrs Leo Wilkerson and Mrs Sue Stitts of Austin spent Saturday night and Sunday with friends and relatives in Cameron.
Mrs Hayden Lawrence of Cameron spent Thursday in Waco for undetermined local errands and social visits.
At a Dallas meeting between Alcoa and T P L officials it was announced the Rockdale plant construction will start within a month. John V Harper of Maryville Tennessee was named operating works manager and Len B Neubert of Vancouver Washington named construction superintendent. Around 1500 workers will be employed at peak, with most subcontracts given to southwestern firms.
Joyce Allison, secretary at First Baptist Church, left Cameron on September 18 to resume studies at North Texas State College in Denton. She will be a sophomore, and her church services will be greatly missed.
Mrs P A Corker, long patient at Anderson Clinic in Houston, has returned home in Milam County and is recuperating well. She will report to the hospital in January for a check up. She and Rev Corker thank the Milam County community for its kindness during her illness.
A total of 14 500 bales of new cotton have been received at Cameron Compress. The cotton was raised and ginned in Milam County and the 1951 harvest appears nearly complete. Migratory laborers have largely left for other areas. The labor shed funded by Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau aided workers and boosted local business.
Miss Ruth Turner daughter of Mr and Mrs Lester of Cameron will be editor of The Bells college paper at Mary Hardin Baylor for the coming year. She was assistant editor last year and is a junior majoring in journalism. Betty Parmeley is assistant editor.
