German officers on the Bapaume front say Anglo-French gains in the Somme are real but limited and may not alter the war’s outcome. They praise German general staff and veteran regiments, note well-trained French units, and describe the massive artillery prep seen by civilians behind the lines.
San Antonio reports that American army scouts in Mexico penetrated Santa Clara canyon chasing Francisco Villa’s marauding band and found nothing. Pershing relayed generals Funston and Pershing’s belief Villa may be near San Andres, about 35 miles west of Chihuahua City, with limited support suspected.
Fort Worth reports Evangelist Ham of the Ham Ramsay revival team was knocked down several times in a local hotel by a man offended by statements about a family member. Ham claimed a gang set upon him and he was beaten during the revival period.
The Marlow citizens and Marlow Baptist Church will host an ice cream and box supper at the church on Friday night September 22. Proceeds will aid in reducing the church debt and organizers urge a large attendance from the public.
Arthur Slone the Buckholts Chevrolet agent spent Monday in Cameron stating locals aim for a good roads bond election for their precinct. The Herald expects a solid vote to pass and quick road construction to begin.

Rev. McWilliams preached two sermons in Maysfield. Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Sanders of Coleman and Misses Owen Bacon Altice Randolph Ada Belle McGuire. The Methodist and Presbyterian churches planned cream suppers with proceeds reported.
A petition circulates in Robertson county calling a road bond election for Franklin Easterly and Hays precincts to issue 125000 in bonds. If approved, total bonds in two to three years reach 575000, creating a complete road system. Austin Wokaty of Marak joins Cheeves Bros. Dry Goods as clerk.
British troops backed by heavy artillery broke German trench lines over a four mile front from Thiepval to Ginchy. Irish units led the main assault on Ginchy village, taking positions within minutes and expanding gains after a night of intensive fighting. About 400 German prisoners, mostly Bavarians, were captured.
Mr. R. H. Redfield, owner of Redfield Electric Blacksmith Shop and Saw Mill, says he received a 5000 crate order from Minerva for next year's truck crop. He will offer competitive prices, has expanded his mill, and will source timber from local farmers. He emphasizes patronizing home industry.
The Geo A Thomas & Sons drug firm adds a phonograph line seen as one of the best on the market. Monta Thomas notes demonstrations will be offered after arrival. Visitors may tour the Texas Bottling and Cream Company plant to view the modern operation and meet Walter Henrichsen.
Dallas, Sept. 12. State Comptroller H. B. Terrell hires C. F. Greenwood and J. J. Collins to assist in asking a rehearing of the Fifth Court of Civil Appeals decision. The issue concerns whether sun time or standard time governs the 9:30 saloon closing law.
