The Elusive Bobcat A Quiet Balance Of North American Life
Native American wisdom calls the coyote a trickster and the bobcat a calm maintainer of order. The Texas bobcat inhabits the entire state while the desert bobcat stays in the west. Bobcats thrive unlike many big cats, adapt to diverse habitats, and hunt from dawn to night. They weigh 15 to 30 pounds on average, have 6 inch tails, ear tufts, and can sprint up to 31 mph. Breeding runs February to March with litters of three, and young stay with mothers until fall. They avoid people yet can prey on small pets or livestock if needed. Texas Parks and Wildlife classifies bobcats as non game, but licensed trappers may sell pelts.
