Citizen challenges Milam County over tax rate and raises
David Horkheimer of Maysfield attended a Milam County tax rate hearing with a list of 10 questions for the commissioners. The panel proposed a tax rate of .61 per $100 value, higher than the effective rate, and a separate budget hearing will be held September 14 at 9:45 a.m. Department heads were absent to answer salary questions, while Judge Frank Summers said next year’s budget includes a 2 percent pay rise as a cost of living adjustment. Horkheimer urged no raises and a tax rate drop to .59, noting COLA effects on retirees. Summers said merit increases drive higher raises and that four recent or proposed hires require department heads’ explanations.
