Italy Surrenders Unconditionally to Allies in World War II

The Italian fleet is handed over to the Allies and Italy signs unconditional surrender terms in Sicily after Eisenhower announces capitulation at 10 45 a m central war time Wednesday. Badoglio confirms ally stance and notes Italian forces will fight with the Allies.

Navy Hero Neeley From Cameron Serves In War

James Weldon Neeley 1st Class Petty Officer volunteered for the Navy in August 1941 and trained at San Diego. He served on the battleship Tennessee starting December 1 1941 and fought in the Coral Sea and Pacific battles including Pearl Harbor salvage work. Neeley is the son of Mr and Mrs James H Neeley of Cameron and hopes for a December 7 1943 return.

Liberator Crew Chief Cpl Julian R Harris Stationed at Willow Run

Cpl Julian Ray Harris, son of Mrs J D Harris of Curry community, reports to Willow Run Army Air Base near Ypsilanti Michigan after basic training at Keesler Field Mississippi and airplane mechanics school. He earned a high average April 17 1949 and graduated from advanced training on the Willow Run honor roll in June 1943. He serves as air crew chief on a B 24E Liberator bomber and hopes to make the army his life work after Tojo and Hitler are taken care of. His brother Lt James T Harris serves in the Field Artillery somewhere in North Africa or Sicily.

Massengale Dies at Maysfield Home in Milam County

H W Massengale aged 65 native of Milam County died suddenly at his Maysfield area home at 6 15 am Thursday from a heart attack. Born December 2 1878 he lived his life on local farms and leaves a widow three sons Major Robert Massengale LeRoy Massengale and Lt Hubert W Massengale two daughters Mrs Lonnie Petty and Mrs Jack Buff a brother A L Massengale and a sister Mrs E D Kelso Funeral services will be held at Maysfield Presbyterian Church with Rev Henry Bailey and interment in the local cemetery under Marek Burns Funeral Home directions.

Dusek Soldier Sent Overseas From Fort Benning to Africa

Cpl Milton L Dusek, inducted December 1941 after Pearl Harbor, landed in North Africa and serves with an army unit in Sicily. He trained at Camp Wolters and clerk school, then worked in the personnel office at Fort Benning before transferring with a parachute infantry division to Fort Bragg and overseas in April. He is son of Mr and Mrs J A Dusek of Cameron Texas and a Yee High School graduate.

Magazines Delivered for Wounded Soldiers by Local Legion Veterans

The largest single shipment of magazines for wounded soldiers was delivered Wednesday afternoon by two American Legion veterans, Jim McGoldrick and Emmett Streetman, who loaded the items from the Herald plant and handed them to Temple hospitals. Cameron Legionaires and their blue caps greeted the effort, with Cameron contributing more magazines than any other central Texas point. The drive, sponsored by the Cameron Herald, included magazines from Mrs. Jeff Kemphere of Buckholts and Mrs. Sam Mewhinney, and Rosebud residents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hrozek Sr. returning home to the town.

Cameron reports bond sales kick off in third war loan drive

War bond buyers in Cameron purchased 217137.50 on the third loan issue on opening day. E C Cole chaired the launch at a Cameron civic meeting as workers received territory assignments and sales kits. Milam county’s quota stands near 5.5 million dollars.

Fire Burns Vrazel Home Near Yarrellton

A Monday morning blaze destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vrazel near Yarrellton while the family of ten was in a cotton field. They lost the house contents and $200 saved by the eight children from their earnings. Only the clothes they wore remained. insured for a small amount.

Local Soldier Pvt Raymond Holloway Recalled for Action

Pvt Raymond Holloway of Field Artillery joined the army March 16, 1943 and is now in the battle zone to aid victory. He trained at Fort Sill after transfer from Fort Sam Houston and recently visited his Cameron wife Frances Hughes and her family. Holloway is the son of Mr and Mrs Matt Holloway of Maysfield and has two brothers in the services.

Promoted to Captain Beacham Serves in North Africa Ties

Capt. Chas M. Beacham has been promoted to captain on July 10 and reports from Oran and Sidi Be Abbés in North Africa with the 7th American Army. He is a Milam County native, a 1941 Yee High School graduate, 29, and a veteran soldier who may join operations in Italy.

Harlingen Gunner Krenek Wins Wings at Harlingen School

Jerry Krenek, son of Adolph and Mrs. Krenek of Cameron, earned Gunner-Technician-Sergeant wings at Harlingen gunnery school after six weeks of intensive training. He trained on varied weapons, completed radio or armament and air crew technician courses, and will depart to join a combat bomber unit unless kept for instruction.

Killen Receives Promotion at Randolph Field

Randolph Field announces Army Air Forces Central Flying Training Command Sgt Wilson Killen, son of Mrs Mable Wright Killen and husband of Mrs Alice S Killen, has been promoted from sergeant to staff sergeant. He serves in the Headquarters unit of the command.
