Local gins hum with prosperity as Cameron reports 5000 bales ginned by Thursday noon and estimates push Millom County cotton to 45000 to 60000 bales. Farmers anticipate above normal production despite price declines and a government report.
The Fire Insurance Commission imposed about 18 000 in penalties on Cameron for 2025 losses, raising premiums by 30 percent. Critics urge curbing arbitrary power and call for writing insurance on hazard, not citywide across the board. Jasper Texas September 6 Simultaneous with the fall of the Fergusons in Jasper county was the christening of a new apple variety propagated by J F Knighton of Roganville He calls it The Dan Moody Apple The apple in maturity is the size of a fair orange and is a rich amber color Mr Knighton vouches for its good flavor M Stone who left Saturday for the state convention in San Antonio carried with him a sample of the fruit for Dan Moody's approval
Milam Lodge No. 25 Knights of Pythias sent 22 members to Caldwell to install the 2nd rank for Caldwell Lodge No. 191. The Cameron party was welcomed and praised for a fine performance. F B Cable spoke in response to the Caldwell Chancellor Commander. Other speakers included Max Collins, Joy Baskin and M G Cox. Attendees listed: Love, Gillis, Cox, Roy Baskin, Taylor, Phillips, Trigger, Burke, Denson, Posey, Cable, Adrian, Longmire, Collins, Stafford, Burke, Kemp, Hood, Esslinger, Clore, Dusek, Faulkner.
On Wednesday and Thursday factory representatives visited the J. D. Dobbins dry goods ready to wear department to present the new fall dresses and sell samples from eleven big lines. The store reports strong business for the two days.
Louis S. Pierce of Navasota and partner Bradbury express strong confidence in business outlook for Cameron and Navasota. They return from eastern markets with stock for the Cameron and Navasota stores, promising one of the finest dry goods selections at unusually low prices.
Sam Hefley was elected by Milam County Democrats to fill the unexpired term of D. S. Hollowell. A total of 555 votes were cast. Hefley received 528 with 27 votes for persons not on the ballot. Cameron precinct cast 45 votes, Hefley taking all. He had no opposition and is the party nominee for a two year term starting February. The special session convenes September 13.
Farewell dance at Wayside Inn on Friday night marks the sendoff for students returning to colleges. J. D. Lewis and his orchestra provide the music. Mr. Cammer has booked top Southern orchestras for fall and winter dances.
Miss Velma Montgomery succeeds Mrs. Etta Ringgold as Milam County demonstration agent. She began duties Thursday as Ringgold leaves for McAllen to continue home demonstration work. Montgomery, raised near Palestine, is a Baylor College for Girls graduate with broad teaching home economics experience. Friends regret Ringgold’s departure. local civic groups and governments pledge support for Montgomery’s work.
The New Cameron Drug Company promotes ready stock of school supplies for Cameron children. Manager Joe Denson says the store offers the best equipment and vows to assist parents and kids as school starts Monday September 13.
In Austin Ferguson accuses the state convention of being dominated by Ku Klux interests naming J W Sullivan of Denton and W L Thorton of Dallas. He praises Dan Moody for denouncing the Klan but says action came too late. He notes a caucus row over a temporary chairman and predicts further developments. San Antonio reports Republican Creager condemns secret societies without naming the Klan.
Van Perkins arrived in Cameron from Dallas where he attended a Texas Interscholastic Association rules committee session. He expects a strong team this year and appeals to patrons of the school for full support.
Max Collins declares his shop offers the best stock ever with a new shipment of fall merchandise for men in Cameron. He says the stock is unmatched and anticipates strong business this fall.
Misses Lena Yoe, Annie Stallworth, Imogene Beach, Mrs. E B Lovick and Joan Henry Yoe traveled to Waco on Friday for a day trip.
The Cameron district opens the 1926 27 school year Monday September 13 with Supt T A Fisher at the helm and a strong faculty returning from state institutes. Fisher promises progress and a forward looking program as teachers and pupils report for the new term.
R A Houston, known to Cameron elders, brings a new Commercial Institution for the Pennsylvania Rubber Company to Cameron. The wholesale and retail tire store will serve Central Texas with the Pennsylvania line as part of a Houston Company branch network. H Arledge named Cameron Store manager to oversee local operations.
At a Knights of Columbus regular meeting held last Thursday the officer slate was chosen. Grand Knight S. B. Hess of Burlington and Deputy Grand Knight H J Schuttle of Cameron head the list with recording secretary J A Lindle of Cameron and treasurer F J Hanel of Milano. Warden Paul Dillon of Burlington serves alongside Advocate John P O'Neil of Burling and Trustee Wm Balhorn of Cameron. Meetings are scheduled for the first and third Thursdays each month.
