Truck Jackknifes on Highway 36 North Injuring Driver

Caldwell resident James Hartley, 54, was seriously injured Friday when his tank truck jackknifed into a ditch after a front tire blew out. He was freed with trouble, rushed to a hospital, and underwent surgery to save a nearly severed left foot. The vehicle carried flammable crude oil and crushed the cab, with Hartley also sustaining a fractured pelvis and chest and heart bruising.

Dove prospects look good at McGregor area

Prospects for the dove season in the McGregor area are favorable if scattered showers don’t disperse the birds. Local sources cite abundant maize and sunflowers attracting doves this year, with J. Norris of the Texas A&M Research and Experiment Station calling it one of the best crops he has seen.

A fire at the Cecil Hicks farm north of Rockdale burned about 600 bales of hay stacked in an open field off Bushdale Road. The cause is unknown but a short in an adjacent electric fence is considered a possible source. damage details were not provided.

Belton Opens Volunteer Ambulance Service

Belton marks Volunteer Ambulance Day as the city kicks off a new volunteer service. Over 30 volunteers have trained for the program and Heartfield Funeral Home donated two ambulances for city use. The units will operate under the Police Department and may be summoned through the police station.

County and area schools total 5 414 students for the 1973 74 year down from 5 718 last year. Cameron 1 694 with 718 K 5, 457 junior high, 468 high, 51 special. Buckholts 116 with 36 high, 38 middle, 42 K4. Rockdale 1 643 with 673 elementary, 420 junior high, 550 high. Rosebud Lott 1 051 with 198 primary, 178 intermediate, 508 at the Advanced Learning Center. Lost grades 1 6 167. Thorndale 452: 226 K6, 69 junior high, 155 high. Milano 291: 82 high, 83 junior high, 113 K and elementary.

Milam County Budget Hearing Sets 1973 74 Plans

Milam County commissioners met Friday to hear the proposed 1973 74 budget and opened bids for two dump trucks. A budget adoption is slated for the September 10 meeting. Bids were Gaither Motor Co 5537 and Rodenbeck Motor Co 5946.84. Voting boxes will consolidate San Gabriel with Sharp Connoley with Thorndale Marak with Yarrellton Branchville with Maysfield. William Pagach was reappointed justice of the peace for Maysfield and Branchville. Typewriters and courthouse exterior cleaning were tabled for a future meeting.

Split Season Open On Doves Prospects Good

Texas dove hunters may again choose a split dove season with a first period from noon to sundown through October 14 in the north zone and a second round January 5 20. The season offers 10 birds per day per hunter and hopes for better turnout after last year’s weather.
