Poage Speaks On 1961 Bills At Cameron Appreciation Dinner

About 220 Milam Countians and visitors attended the Appreciation Dinner in Cameron honoring Congressman W. R. Poage. The speech covered major 1961 federal legislation, defense of U.S. training of Yugoslav pilots, and criticism of indignation rallies in Dallas, with Poage urging policy unity and caution on minimum wage and federal aid to education.

Lamkin Funeral Held for Milam County Rancher

Funeral services for W. S. Lamkin were held at 2 p m Saturday at the Marlow Baptist Church with Rev Aubrey Russell officiating. Born November 23 1876 in Milam County he died Friday at age 84. He was a Milam County landowner farmer and rancher. Burial was in Lamkin cemetery. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include one brother Bob Lamkin and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Carl Black Ted Kuehl Erskine McDermott Walter White John S Batte and Sam Tindall. Arrangements were with Marek Burns.

Nursing Home Under Construction on East 11th Street

Construction begins this week in the 700 block of East 11th Street on a fourteen room concrete tile nursing home by Roy Callaway Construction Company Rockdale. It will house 20 patients with air conditioning a licensed nurse on duty and modern furnishings. Owners include Mr and Mrs William A Watkins Mr and Mrs O A Felschinsky and Mr and Mrs Willis Kuhn. Completion expected January 1 with applications after December 1. Mrs Felschinsky has run a Rosebud home for the aged for 13 years.

Hoskins Returns To Chief's Post In Bryan

Former Cameron chief Elvin Hoskins is named police chief to succeed his successor Ray Williamson. Williamson, 39, left Bryan for West Columbia after a year long tenure, while Hoskins resumes duties today. Mayor Duncum and the council praise Hoskins as Williamson plans future moves.

Services Held For Mrs Polzer In Houston

Funeral services were held for Mrs Janice Patricia Polzer 34 at St Monica s Catholic Church in Houston with burial at St Monica s Cemetery. She died from burns after an explosion in her Houston home about a month earlier. Survivors include husband Lawrence Polzer daughter Rebecca Lynn parents Mr and Mrs Ray O Neill Dallas area siblings and several named relatives.

Funeral Rites Held For Jim Sprayberry of Cameron

Funeral services Sunday marked the death of Jim Sprayberry 81 at Newton's Hospital. Retired farmer and First Baptist Church member, he leaves a large family including wife, four sons in Texas and Nebraska, two daughters, siblings, and 12 grandchildren. Burial followed at Heidenfeimer Cemetery with pallbearers named.

Buckholts Church Donates 93 Dollars to relief fund

The Buckholts Brethren Church gave 93 dollars to the Milam Carla Relief Fund for the Red Cross. H. D. Maxwell, Milam Red Cross chairman, said the check arrived late last week and was signed by church treasurer John Balusek. The fund total rose to 378 dollars from 285 previously.

Revival Set at Cameron Gospel Tabernacle

A revival begins Sunday at 7 30 p m at the Cameron Gospel Tabernacle with Rev H M Bowley pastor and evangelist Mrs O L Salstrand of Corpus Christi. The revival is to run one week and the public is invited to attend each meeting.

Matthews Funeral Rites for Otho Mathews Jr in Hearne

Otho Mathews Jr died of a heart ailment in Hearne on October 9. Born June 29 1917 in Hearne he attended Hearne High School and served three years in the Navy during World War II. He retired from Southern Pacific Railroad and married Mary Evelyn Gunn in December 1941. Funeral services were held from Grace Methodist Church October 11 with Rev. John B. Windham officiating. interment in Norwood Cemetery. Survivors include his wife parents Charles Mathews Sr Jane Willis and three brothers Charles Edward Jack.

Milam's Company C Begins Training at Fort Polk Louisiana

The Cameron National Guard unit Company C 3rd Medium Tank Battalion arrives in Louisiana for immediate training at Fort Polk after a two week active duty period. An advance party cleared the area last week. Mayor Coleman Duncum spoke at a going away party and Sheriff Carl Black received the armory keys.

Clarence Baskin Rites Held At Cameron

Funeral services were held at 3 p m Saturday for Clarence Baskin born April 4 1886 in Union Springs Alabama who moved to Texas as a child. He married Mildred Britt in 1909 and lived in Buckholts before moving to Cameron about ten years ago. He was a Walkers Creek Baptist Church member. Burial followed at Walkers Creek Cemetery. Survivors include his wife three daughters a son a sister nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Tickets for the Hearne Eagle Cameron Yeomen football game were on sale at Yoe High School principal’s office.

Milam suit seeks $179000 for Decker injuries in Cameron area crash

Harold Wayne Decker of Texas City files in Milam District Court seeking 179000 in damages from Wade Augustus Brooks and T M Sappington of Waco over a July collision at FM 845 SH 36 two miles west of Cameron. Decker claims brain concussion, multiple fractures and lifelong disability plus 179000 for medical and income losses. Two others died in the wreck Wanda Mae Decker 21 and Wendell Burns Jones 24.
