Sgt Charlie Tomek recalls bitter battles from Normandy to Czechoslovakia

Sgt Charlie Tomek, recently discharged, spends a few weeks at home near Cameron. He describes 320 days of combat from Omaha Beach on June 7 1944 through Trevieres Brest Paris and into Germany toward Czechoslovakia. He served with the 38th Field Artillery 2nd Division under General Hodges.

Mrs Jesse L Smith Dies In Waco Home At 66

Mrs Jesse L Smith died suddenly at her Waco home on Sunday October 21 1945 at age 66 She was born Emma Bradshaw and farmed near Buckholts and Marlow Survivors include her husband two sons a daughter six grandchildren two brothers a sister and a half brother Funeral services are set for October 23 1945 at 10:00 A M in Waco with burial at Marlow cemetery Interment will follow in Marlow cemetery Also noted is Set W W Billie Loftin arriving in New York after serving with the European Theatre in the Third Army and his wife living in Waco

Ten year sentence meted forger in Texas cases

Alton Davis pleaded guilty and was sentenced by Judge John Watson in District Court to 10 years in Texas prison. The court rejected a 4 year concurrent term proposed by the county attorney. Davis forged two checks on a Cameron firm and a Caldwell bank, with a long prior record. Sheriff Carl Black brought him from Sweetwater. Davis claimed innocence and a history of prior prison terms.

Milam County Soil Promoted by Cameron Chamber

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce launches an illustrated folder to advertise Milam county soil. Rev Paul D Wright of Refugio accepts a call to First Presbyterian Church in Cameron and will become minister there on or about November 1. Wright has served Refugio for years and will move to Cameron with Mrs Wright in a few days after preaching locally several weeks earlier.

Chamber Chooses November 29 as Thanksgiving Day

Cameron officials report the Chamber of Commerce recommended Thursday November 29 for Thanksgiving Day. Governor Stevenson proclaimed November 22 as Thanksgiving. The Texas A and M football game influenced the Chamber board decision to pick November 29 as the best date.

P F Holder Pioneer at Friendships Dead

P F Holder aged 85 died at 4 a m Friday at the home of his son P E Holder with whom he resided. He lived in the Friendship community fifty years as a farmer. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at Friendship. Survivors include P E Holder of Friendship W A Holder of Liberty Hill Ellie Holder of Arizona twenty seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The body remains at the family home until burial.

Virgil R. Lake Receives Purple Heart and Treatment

Virgil R. Lake, European War hero and Purple Heart recipient, is being treated at Brooks General Hospital in San Antonio while pursuing schooling. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will V. Lake of Cameron and served in a Mortar Squad under General Patton. Lake was wounded in Germany, flown to France, returned to the front, fell ill with fever, and arrived back in Cameron on a 45 day furlough aboard the George Washington. His wife and child remain with him in San Antonio.

War Bond drive kicks off October 29 in Milam County

Dan Tyson, Milam County Chairman, announced a Victory Loan kick off for October 29 at 7 30 PM in Cameron High School gym. About 300 volunteers from all areas will form a county wide unit to inform workers about bonds and supplies. The drive targets 985 000 total with 210 000 in Series E bonds. They finished their job lets finish ours.

Ford to display 1946 models Friday in Dearborn

Dearborn Michigan October 23 Ford will display the new 1946 models on Friday the first postwar public showing for a carmaker. H H Stedman of Hefley Stedman Motor Co said one new model will be shown locally and rooms have been enlarged for the display. J R Davis said prices may not be set by OPA yet delaying dealer deliveries but production is moving and hundreds of Fords should reach sales areas within weeks. He will pursue a price arrangement to allow early purchase.

City faces housing shortage spurs survey and housing list

Camerons' acute housing shortage prompts a house to house survey to place returning workers and war plant workers. The Chamber of Commerce led by A W McCuilin will organize a confidential file of available rooms and apartments with hotels listing spare spaces to monthly renters.

Centennial Committee List Is Completed

Chamber of Commerce seeks Cameron bond election

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce urges Cameron City Council to call an immediate bond election to fund planning board recommended improvements. The plan includes street work a city administration building a public library a farmer's marketing center and other projects at low borrowing costs. Reddehase wins first in Cameron pig show at Sears contest

Henry Reddehase of Ben Arnold won first with a registered Jersey gift in the Sears Roebuck 4-H Club Pig Show in Cameron. J. W. Davis, Milam county official and ex Lt. in Patton’s 3rd Army, supervised the event. Other winners included Robert Lee Schulte, Carroll Roecker, and Denison Provasek. Exhibitors received cash prizes and Reddehase advances to the district show in Waco on November 2.

Navy veteran John S Burns joins Capital National Bank Austin

John S Burns a former Navy lieutenant and Silver Star recipient has been appointed assistant cashier at Capital National Bank in Austin. Born in Cameron and educated at the University of Texas, he served aboard the destroyers Walke and Roe during World War II including Luzon Okinawa Casablance Sicily and Salerno landings before entering inactive reserve.
