Sgt Charlie Tomek recalled World War II battles against Germany, describing reinforce ment, cold weather, and heavy casualties. He spoke of the Metz breakthrough, Patton's Third Army, and his 820 days in combat across Europe.
SGT. Herbert H. Haase of West New York New Jersey arrived in Cameron after duty in Japan. He trained at Camp Wheeler and Camp Hood and served with the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion later joining the 148th Field Artillery of the 112th RCT. His unit fought in Leyte and Luzon before occupation duty in Tokyo Bay. He was discharged at Fort Bliss and wears the Philippines ribbon with one battle star Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with two stars the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Ribbon.
Alton Davis, serving ten years for forgery, escaped from Cameron jail Friday night by tampering with his cell during the Taylor Cameron game. He fled to Houston, formed a five man gang, helped two armed robberies, and was later arrested after a gun fight with officers. Davis has a long criminal record and was paroled by Governor Stevenson. His wife was arrested for displaying a pistol. R. A. Hosch and son from Belton shopped in Cameron Wednesday.
Stillwater Oklahoma hal mcnutt will speak at Cameron Rotary on Wednesday November 7 under Rotary International Speaker Service. J M Boehner announced the local club aims to give him an extended hearing marking the first time a Rotary International representative appears as principal speaker.
The Agricultural Committee of the Chamber of Commerce postpones the Central Texas Poultry Show indefinitely due to inability to secure any show coops. It plans to reschedule in the future as a standout event for the central part of the state.
John B. Dodson Jr from Fairfield California spoke with his mother in California on Monday. He planned to be in San Antonio October 30 for his discharge and then join his wife in Austin before traveling to Cameron Friday. Dodson served over a year in Guam.
Gilbert L. Hughes of the 9th Infantry, awarded the Silver Star, was reported missing on 20 October 1944 in Germany and is now presumed dead, according to a letter from Major General Edward I F Witsell to the Hughes family in Cameron. The War Department said wartime conditions prevented confirmation of survival.
Mrs W N Jinks a Cameron resident for years died of a heart attack at her Houston home on Thursday October 25 1945 Funeral services were set for 10 a m Saturday October 27 1945 Surviving are her husband W N Jinks and two children Charles Jinks of Houston and Mrs Jim Wiley of Austin Mrs Wiley known here as Miss Emma Harper Mr Wiley a well known Texas businessman Friends here mourn her loss.
Hundreds of Texas residents are using out of state license plates to operate vehicles. Colonel Homer Garrison Jr. of the Texas Department of Public Safety announces an immediate enforcement program to ensure residents register their automobiles in Texas. The move aims to keep revenue in Texas and support state highways.
Ration points dropped as OPA announced new releases for civilian goods. Shoe rationing may end by November 1 or December with earlier point reductions and car rationing tied to trucks ending sooner. Butter points fall from 12 to 8. Seaman Wesley Pratt visited his Marlow parents over the weekend.
Mrs. Nettie Storey of Cameron Chapter is named Worthy Matron after returning from the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star held in Amarillo on Saturday October 26.
Tom Holmes, former editor and superintendent of The Mansfield News, moves to Cameron to work with The Herald. His wife Mrs Holmes joins him this week as they relocate confident about Cameron’s prospects. Holmes served in World War II medical detachment and will oversee operations and provide editorial work at The Herald.
Private Walter F. Anderle of Cameron earned the Bronze Star at Brooke Convalescent Hospital Fort Sam Houston Texas Brig Gen Geo C Beach presented it for heroism near Leyte in November 1944 with Company A 34th Regiment 23rd Division. He served since 1942 overseas ten months and carries multiple ribbons and badges. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Albert A Anderle of Cameron and now serves in the Brooke hospital Medical Detachment.
Clarence and Mrs. Isbell of Thorndale receive the Silver Star for their son Sgt. Howard W. Isbell of the 384th Infantry, 84th Division. The posthumous honor cites gallantry during a river crossing in Germany on February 24, 1945, where Isbell supervised vital communications under heavy fire and was killed rather than retreat. The ceremony occurred at the Thorndale American Legion hall with Capt. C. A. Johnson presenting the citation.
J. M. Timmons of Gause transacted business in Cameron on Tuesday.
The Yoemen host Hearne on Friday night for the season’s last home game. Hearne tied Marlin 6 6, while Hearne’s recent form is under scrutiny as coach Leo Jackson drives a focused week. The Yoemen seek rebound after a 38 0 loss to Killeen with Belton to follow.

All Legionnaires and ex service men will report to the U S O at 9 45 Sunday morning November 4th. They will go in a body to the Catholic Church, continuing a post war Cameron custom observed since the end of World War I. They attend a church in Cameron on the Sunday before November 11th.
Senior class of 46 hosts Cameron High School homecoming the first in Cameron with about 8 000 graduates invited from Yee High School since 1892. Events include a 430 band concert 5 00 graduate organization 530 reception 745 class recognition before the Cameron Hearne game and a 1000 dance in the gym with class entertainment options 6 00 to 7 45.
Fort Worth author Boyce House, famed for I Give You Texas and Texas Proud and Loud, will address Yee High School students November 7 at 2 15 pm. House, a 125 speeches per year man and radio voice, has penned two bestsellers and a popular Texas humor column.
The Yee High School gym hosts the annual Armistice Day dinner on Sunday November 11 at 1 00 p m. Hundreds of service men are expected to attend with an entertaining program and veterans information. Ticket allotment is 600 and may sell out. next week a full program will be published. Warrant Officer Luther Reichert and his wife visited Rufus Reichert's family for the weekend.
