Hundreds gather for the formal opening of McLain Pontiac Company on Saturday October 13. The event runs from noon through the afternoon with gardenias novelties and soft drinks for guests. Jimmy Heap and His Melody Masters perform a city broadcast from KTEM Temple.
Rev. John C. Solomon and Drayton McLane attended the Synod of Texas in Austin last week as plans were laid for the coming year. Also present were Dr. W. R. Hall and Rev. E. O Harrell, former ministers of the local church. Austin Presbyterian churches hosted delegates with activities from Tuesday through Thursday at several city churches.
A Cameron vaccination clinic for dogs is set for Wednesday and Thursday October 17 and 18 at the Fire Station from 4 to 6 pm. Alderman John Andres urges all dog owners to participate to curb rabies, with a small fee. Veterinarians Dr. Robert Titsworth and Dr. Lue McDermott will supervise.
Mrs. Georgie Gunn aged 94 died at her daughter’s home in Cameron on Thursday October 11 1951 after a long illness. Born in 1856 in Alabama she lived with her daughter and was active in the Baptist Church. Funeral services were set for 3 30 p m Saturday October 13 at Marek Burns Funeral Home with Rev Harry Wootan and Rev P A Corkern officiating. Interment Walkers Creek Cemetery. Surviving: sons Dan Gunn Cameron Homer Gunn McAllen daughter Mrs Harvey Dobbins Cameron two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Alvis Burrell Turner and Elbert Earl Turner of Cameron Texas reached eighteen in October and registered with Milam County Local Board. Both are Yee High School seniors, sons of Mr and Mrs Lester Turner.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Nicholson and daughter Joyce visited the Dallas fair on Sunday, joining attendees from the area and enjoying the event together.
Sixteen Milam County young men receive orders for induction on November 7, 1951 in Dallas Texas. They depart by bus from the Milam Hotel at 1 30 p m November 6 arriving in Dallas about 7 p m for an overnight stay prior to induction into the Army or Marine Corps on November 7. Citizens may see them off at 1 15 p m at the Milam Hotel.
Sharp School hosts a Halloween Carnival on Saturday night October 20. Contests and prizes are planned with ample food. The public is invited to attend.
R B Self of Gause was a business visitor in Cameron on Saturday.
New leaders and assistants with no prior training are urged to attend a training school led by Miss Frances Sowell and Miss Lowell in Cameron at the Girl Scout Little Hut in Wilson Ledbetter Park from October 16 to 18 starting at 10 a.m. The event aims to strengthen the local Girl Scout program as Scout Week observes October 28 to November 3.
About 200 disabled veterans from Houston's Veterans Hospital will attend the 3rd performance of the 20th Annual Prison Rodeo in Huntsville on Sunday October 21. A. C. Turner said this marks the fourth year veterans ride to the event by arrangement with Andy Anderson. Special ringside seats and transportation are provided for the group.
H B Pressley, a noted farmer from Hoyte Community, brings in lucious Pressley pears from Milam County. The fruit is praised as among the best in Central Texas with strong local reputation.
Womack J. Brashear, 68, died at St. Edward Hospital October 16 1951 after days of declining health. He served as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1 for many years and recently resigned. Born December 28 1882 in Milam County he was a member of a prominent local family and former constable. He married Leona Small in 1919 and had two sons Thomas and Warren. Funeral services were held October 17 at Green's Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, two sons and a brother. Pallbearers named.
Hundreds of letters arrive daily to Jim Cantrell of Princeton, chairman of the campaign to defeat a proposed constitutional amendment revising old age assistance. Cantrell warns the amendment would open pension rolls to foreigners and non residents, risking reduced payments to current Texas pensioners and drawing outsiders to qualify.
Sgt James Cryer longtime Green Motor Company employee has been named assistant manager after release from inactive Air Force duty. Cryer served four years in World War II and two years in the China Burma India area before being recalled in October 1950. He is a Cameron figure with his wife Mrs Cryer and children Cathy and Russell joining him.
Chief W W Robbins announced Paul Buke USN son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Burke of Cavilla was selected Honor man of Company 683 at the San Diego Naval Training Center. The honor recognizes proficiency, leadership, and naval drills in a company of 140. Burke enlisted in June 1951 after Yee High School and San Marcos State Teachers College.
The Cameron Council of Church Women announces World Community Day at First Presbyterian Church on November 2 at 3 p m with the theme Live Thy Faith The event promotes faith in action and asks for blanket donations to aid the homeless Cash gifts and blankets will be collected Mrs J L Callaway serves as president and Mrs John B Henderson leads the program
The A M Club of Cameron schedules a November 14 meeting with no venue or time fixed yet. Members should contact Sam White to discuss the program details. A film of the A M O U football game will be shown by Dick Hervey, president of the Ex-Student Association, courtesy of Humble Oil and Refining Co. All Ex-Aggies and local club members are urged to attend. place and time to be announced.
All Saints Episcopal Church will hold a communion service on Thursday October 18 at 9 30 a m Rev James McKeown invites doctors to worship together honoring St Luke the physician and patron of medicine The invitation emphasizes the day as fitting for the medical profession and fellowship.
B. F. Cone 77, longtime Minerva resident, died at his home on Sunday October 14 1951 after years of illness. He leaves his daughter Mrs E C Cole of Cameron and was active in mercantile and agricultural work. Funeral 2:30 p m Monday at First Methodist Hearne with Rev Mark Mayers and Rev Miller T Smith officiating. Interment Winston Cemetery Minerva by Green's Funeral Home.
Texas faces its highest pink bollworm infestation on record according to State Agriculture Commissioner John C. White. He warns farmers will incur millions of dollars in losses next year and cites labor shortages during harvest as a main factor. Control relies on early cotton field plowing. The pest feeds on cotton and thrives in cool damp conditions.
Ernest A. Sharpe UT advertising professor will address the Texas Admen at the Texas Press Association Advertising Convention in Austin on Saturday October 20. He has worked for Dallas Morning News Bryan Daily Eagle and KPRC radio and served as U S Foreign Service Vice Consul in Lisbon Naples and Budapest from 1940 to 1945. He leads Alpha Delta Sigma and once presided over the Austin Advertising Club.
Cameron businessman Joe Luce, patient at Newton Memorial Hospital, is reported resting satisfactorily after a light stroke. Attending physician Dr. David Shapiro confirms the improvement, and friends hope he will be out soon.
R. E. Boettcher of Lincoln was seriously injured on Highway 77 south of Rockdale early Monday morning October 15. His car overturned and threw him from the vehicle. He suffered severe head and other injuries and was taken to St. Edward Hospital where he remains in serious condition.
Cameron businessman Calvin Markham remains a patient at St. Edward Hospital for several more days as he shows progress. Friends report he is improving and will soon be able to leave the hospital.
The Ideal Hatchery and Poultry Farm earned blue and red ribbons at the State Fair Chick en Breeding Show and Commercial Laying Flock Division. Owners Mr and Mrs Leo Fuchs attended, with seven white leghorn exhibits in breeding earning six blue superior ribbons and one red excellent, plus two top production white leghorn entries in the commercial division both blue ribbon winners and one crowned champion commercial exhibit with a banner. Ed Parnell judged the event.
