San Gabriel High School expresses appreciation for the Cameron Herald and notes the weekly paper is in their library. The school opened September 16 with registration September 13, has 11 faculty, a four year program, 15 credited units, and WPA funded building plans worth $25,000. Seniors Lonzo Johnson and Lonnie lead FFA, and the school won parade and fair honors with the Goddess of Water float and FFA exhibits.

Army Seeks 469 Men For Fort D. A. Russell Garrison

The United States Army seeks 469 men to join the 77th Field Artillery at Fort D. A. Russell in Marfa around November 1. Recruiting officers will be in Cameron Friday and Saturday to enlist volunteers. The Herald notes the enlistment offers rapid advancement and no seniority rule, with government transport to Marfa. Additional recruiting will occur at the federal building on October 20 and 21.

Church of Christ to Hold Sermon Series by Brother Noble

Parade Prize Winners Named by Local Committee

Local parade prizes were announced Thursday morning by BE A Perrin director. Top entries included Little’s Tee Station winning 87.50, San Gabriel’s Water Nymphs taking 5.00 for an out of town school entry, Cameron High School FFA boys earning 5.00, Ada Henderson School named most beautiful with 10.00, and James Collier Pierson of Rockdale awarded 2.50 for most comical.

Red Wagons Hit Can Cron Wednesday Circus Pageant

Can cron hosts Seal Bros. Big Three Ring Wild Ardinal Circus on Wednesday October 23 with two grand shows at 2 and 8 pm. Burlington Picnic Large Success at St Michael Church

The third annual St Michael Catholic Church picnic in Burlington drew a large crowd with 80 attendees reported. Father O'Sullivan announced the tally Tuesday as the parade occurred at 11 p.m. Parish women served dinner and supper while Heese directed entertainment. The pastor and parish thanked volunteers and residents for the event’s financial and social success.

San Gabriel School Wins Parade Prize

Miss Lucille Camp of the San Gabriel school faculty attended the city fair opening. The San Gabriel school entered a parade float and won first prize for entries outside the city. The school shared thanks to the Herald for weekly editions to the school library and introduced a weekly news budget from San Gabriel, one of four rural county high schools.

Seven Milam County Girls Enroll at Texas State College for Women

Seven Milam County girls enrolled at Texas State College for Women in Denton for the 1955 56 fall semester. Names include Mabel Evard Dorothea Luebcka Patricia Lyon Frances McDermott Nancy Newton and Nancy Hele Williams from Cameron with Martha Anne Swafford from Rockdale. The college reports over 2 200 students making it the largest women’s college worldwide with 204 Texas ties and 18 other states plus one foreign country represented.
