Two Killed In Accident Near Rosebud US 77

A two car crash about three miles south of Rosebud on US 77 killed Sidney Lamet of Waco and Mrs. Harold Fitterman of Waco. Three others were injured including Mrs. Lamet, Fitterman, and B Bellah of Louisville, plus Cemterton. Slain victim’s wife Mrs. Lamet is the former Eleanor Winfield. Survivors, hospital stays, and accident details follow standard police reporting.

Del Mar star Zarosky in bench interference incident

Former Yoe High star George Zarosky, now at Del Mar Junior College, was involved in a bench side tackle during a Cisco game. Danny Cantu of Cisco entered the field obstructing Zarosky’s view, causing 12 men on the field and a 15 yard penalty. Funeral services held for Mrs Absnaider in Cameron

Mrs Lewis Absnaider Sr aged 58 died October 8 in a Galveston hospital. Services were at St Monica's Church with Rev Geiser and Rev Kallus officiating. Burial followed at St Monica's Cemetery. Survivors include husband Lewis Absnaider, mother Katherine Hromcik, three sons Lewis Leon George, one daughter Katherine, siblings Joe Stanley Rudolph Wohleb Oswald, and three grandchildren. Pallbearers listed. Marek Burns Funeral Home in charge.

Sam Bollinger 59 Dies of Heart Attack in Jacksonville

Sam Bollinger aged 59 died of a heart attack September 30 in Jacksonville where he had lived 29 years. He rose from city fireman to Chief of Police in 1939 and led the department since then. Funeral held October 2 at First Methodist Church with burial in City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Thelma, two sons Billy and Jack, a brother Walter Bollinger, sisters Lettie Smoots and Leeman Wilson, and four grandchildren.

Alcoa Foundation Scholarship seeks local high school seniors

With ten days left before the October 24 deadline, 19 Rockdale area high school students picked up applications for the 1941 Alcoa Foundation Scholarship. The award offers 2500 for four years of college to a son or daughter of a Rockdale Alcoan. Applications are available from Rockdale Works supervisors or the plant public relations office and must be turned in to the high school principal by October 24. The principals forward them to Milam County School Superintendent H. D. Maxwell, chairman of the selection board.

Thomas R Vaughan dies at 78 in Lake Jackson

Thomas Robert Vaughan 78 of Lake Jackson died suddenly at his home Sunday. He was born February 22 1882 in Cameron and lived in Lake Jackson 18 years. Vaughan operated the Lake Jackson Barber Shop for 45 years retiring in 1956. He is survived by his wife Nancy Lea Vaughan a son Thomas I Vaughan of Freeport a daughter Wanda Lea Dollinger of Braithwaite La two grandchildren two great grandchildren and four sisters J S Adams of Tyler Mary Boyd of Cameron Emma Proctor of Palestine and Laura Brock of Cameron. Funeral services were held 10 30 am Tuesday at the Lake Jackson Church of Christ with Rev Frank Newton officiating Burial was at Restwood Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Freeport Funeral Home.

Students Hear Bob Laurence at Yee High School

Bob Laurence from the Bureau of Economic Understanding addressed Yee High School students on Our American Heritage. Introduced by County School Superintendent H. D. Maxwell, he noted 13 years with the bureau and recent residence in Venezuela, and urged youths to defend democracy and oppose socialism and Communism.

Kickoff Monday Fund Drive Opens

A kickoff meeting of about 60 workers Monday will start the 1960 North Milam United Fund drive chairman Richard W. Moseley said. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m. at The Texan as workers begin contacting businesses and employees during the first week of the drive.

About 160 Cameron Quarterback Club members and VHS gridiron fans heard Dr. Rhea H. Williams athletic director of the University Athletic League discuss athletics as a character builder. The program featured remarks from Bill Bates and introductions of local coaches and players as the North Milam Fund drive details were announced. The drive targets 11 500 to be shared among seven agencies and the United Fund approach is urged for consolidated giving.

Field Narrows For Police Job

Police Chief Elvin Hoskins said he has narrowed the city patrolman applicants to two men. He recommended Vernie Miller for the patrolman post and the City Council approved last week. Final reference checks are due, and he will name a radio dispatcher candidate at the next Council meeting.

Wilkinson Describes Cameron Door Factory Operations

James Buck Wilkinson assistant plant supervisor for Walled Lake Door Co. spoke to the Cameron Lions Club about daily production at about 1,800 doors and the 40-employee payroll. Richard W. Moseley urged full Lions Club cooperation to meet the $11,500 North Milam United Fund quota and reported on the seven-agency fund.

Milam County Cotton Crop Seen Near 16,000 Bales

Cameron Compress reports 13,600 bales so far this season with manager P. W. Davis noting a possible reach of 16,000 bales for the 1960 Milam crop. Last year Milam produced 17,000 bales. heavy August rains and September heat affected yields and price outlook.

Funeral services for Mrs B F Stidham

Funeral services were held at 3 p m Monday from Little River Baptist Church for Mrs B F Stidham with Rev Melburn Sibley officiating and burial in Little River Cemetery. She was born March 18 1866 in Martin County North Carolina and died October 8 at the home of her daughter in Calvert. Alcoa to Unveil Slag Seal Road Demonstration in Rockdale

More than 200 engineers and officials will observe Alcoa on site at Rockdale Works as Slurry Seal is applied to a 1.5 mile private road segment using Rockdale slag aggregate.
