Milam-Areans describe a fast moving blaze of unknown origin that leveled the McGregor inn in just over an hour. Dan Rost estimates damages around 250000 dollars and plans for possible rebuilding are not yet decided. The inn, built in 1925, was described as a company asset at the time of the fire.
Police on the scene arrest a suspect at a Caldwell residence where marijuana plants were located. Officers observed the site via a stakeout camera and recovered additional cannabis as the suspect was taken to jail.
The Williamson County judge disqualified himself after pre-trial motions in cases filed in county court against the Fourth of July Picnic and Cracker-Jack Productions. The action came as Willie Nelson’s corporation faced motions. Nelson is a Liberty Hill native.
Palmos a Hearne attorney suffered a severe leg break after falling 20 25 feet from a deer stand while working on a lease building. He previously fractured the same leg in a motorcycle crash while attending the University of Texas.
Belton public schools faced a brief setback after five school buses were found with brake line issues. Belton Police and Detective Ceci are investigating suspected malicious mischief. If charges follow, the case could be serious for the district and drivers.
Amtrak ends the zig zag at the Temple junction of the Santa Fe and Missouri Kansas Texas lines by installing a north south spur at South 12th Street. The project eliminates the Milano detour for the St. Louis to Laredo corridor, reducing travel time for the passenger train.

Postmaster Henry Litzman announced a nationwide Consumer Service Program to enhance mail service quality starting October 1. The Cameron Post Office and others will use a consumer service card to identify and address problems, with cards shared between carriers and Washington headquarters to catalog issues and drive corrective action. The program emphasizes friendly courteous efficient service and invites customers to bring inquiries and complaints directly to postal managers.
County Agent says Milam County not yet quarantined for fire ants and likely to take months. USDA official notes possible partial quarantines and says hay and equipment may move without inspection while transport items are checked to prevent spread. Texan agents confirm ants in Cameron area and south county. Mirex bait restricted due to EPA issues though mound treatment remains effective.
A glaucoma screening program offers free tests for Milam County residents aged 35 and over. The event runs Sunday after noon October 12 from 2 30 to 5 p m at the Rockdale Elementary School cafeteria. The free tests are sponsored by local health groups.
Perlie James Krenek of Cameron appointed chairwoman of the Milam County Chapter of the National Foundation March of Dimes. She succeeds Bob Burnet of Rockdale, who remains on the board as advisor.
