Tax on Social Security and pension income for retirees

Social Security benefits are not taxable in general. Pension taxability depends on contributions and plan type. costs recovered can make pension nontaxable until recovery, then fully taxable. Retirement income credit may reduce tax by up to ten percent under certain conditions. Room and board for work is taxable income if FMV plus other income exceeds IRS filing thresholds. For high annual income, increasing withholding can avoid owing tax by year end.
