State and local tax hikes took effect with sales tax rising from 5 to 3.25 percent and new beer and liquor taxes. Cigarette taxes rose to 15.5 cents a pack and a five cent levy on drinks in private clubs. City and county notices went out, with payments and tax rolls showing activity as of late September and early October.
City Council will hold a public hearing at City Hall at 5 39 p m on Tuesday October 21 to consider reconcilations of the Cameron Zoning Commission for the area recently annexed to the City. All interested persons should plan to attend.
Milam County faces a lean 1969 pecan year as growers report a near total crop failure. Last year 450000 pounds were harvested and experts warn poor yields due to weather, pests, and spraying costs. Anton Anderle ties the drop to May blooming storms while others blame rain and disease, predicting scarce pecan exhibits this fall.

Police Chief warns residents after two daylight burglaries and an attempted break in. At the WOR Well home in ft Man Sheerin a Civil War era silver pocket watch and a second medium pocket watch were stolen. In a separate burglary a purse at 706 N College contained 15 dollars. 880 was left by the intruder. An attempted burglary of the First Christian Church failed when a congregant returned after services. Entry was through a back door by two men likely in their early 20s.
A Cameron Public Library meeting is set for Thursday at 6 49 pm to organize a June 1970 Cameron cultural festival. About 20 people are expected, led by Mrs. Perry Holder former Friends of Cameron Library president. Representatives from dance groups and other committees are invited.
The Salvation Army, one of six agencies funded by Cameron United Fund, aided 27 locals last year with groceries, rent, meals, clothing, and other support. The United Fund budget allocates 82 490 to the Salvation Army next year if the drive goal of 0 900 is reached starting October 7, with other beneficiaries including Red Cross and Boy Scout groups. John Sola chairs the local committee, which notes funds stay in the community and may access state emergency funds.
Cameron PTA will review a school age drug abuse film at its meeting at 7 50 pm Thursday October 2 in the Ben Milam cafetorium. Nurse Gloria Perkins will discuss the Cameron schools drug abuse program and provide a list of drug symptoms. PTA president Mrs Louis Ialey stresses parental involvement in the local education effort.
Mrs. Irma Boyd, WIBC national field representative, visits Cameron October 3 for a 7 30 pm forum hosted by the Cameron Women's Bowling Association. The meeting features WIBC services, programs and future events, with a slide presentation and questions on rules and procedures.
Rivals Country Store Flea Market opens at 10 a m Saturday at the former Wm Carey Lumber Co site in Cameron Hardware. Proceeds go to St Edward Hospital Development Fund to repay the prior $19 000 loan. items include jewelry clothes furniture and more donated by St Edward Hospital Auxiliary members.
