Three Austin residents died and five others were injured in a head on collision north of Lyons on Highway 36 last week. Investigating trooper said a car passed in a no passing zone near a hill crest and hit an oncoming truck. Both drivers swerved to avoid the crash and collided on the road shoulder.

Homemaker Workshop Aids Elderly In Temple Area

A community program beginning January 1 offers light housekeeping meal prep shopping bill paying laundry and other services for seniors on SSI or eligible for SSI. Some clients will be visited daily or several times weekly. Shirley Holliman Crestview Nursing Home directs the workshop with Roy Boutwell speaking in Cameron.

Milam County Reports 3500 Swine Flu Shots Given

Milam County has inoculated 3,500 residents against swine flu through county health clinics in Cameron Rockdale Thorndale Buckholts and in doctors offices. The Public Health Service urges 18 24 year olds to take two shots and children 3 17 to receive two doses four weeks apart but vaccine is scarce with only ten percent of demand supplied. Clinics run Mondays 1 4 45 p.m. and Thursdays 8 4 45 p.m. at the Milam County Health Department in Cameron and shots are free.

Grant Approved For Water System Expansion In Texas

The Farmers Home Administration approved a 50000 grant to Southwest Milam Water Supply Corp to expand service around Rockdale. Total FmHA grants for the project reach 1255000 with a 650000 loan. 758 current customers expected to grow to 1100 after completion. Mark Towery says a new water well is finished and lines will be laid to serve rural customers.

Bremond Man Injured In Pickup Truck Overturn

A Bremond man, Joe Chemiel 52, was injured when his pickup overturned on a curve near Highway 77 one mile south of Ben Arnold around 7:30 a.m. He received emergency care at St Edward Hospital Cameron then was transferred to a Temple hospital. DPS Trooper Mil ton Wright investigated. A Milano man, Raymond Little, was charged with driving while intoxicated after a near head on collision on Highway 79 east of the Milano overpass. Delphine Walker of Austin was the other driver. There were no injuries. Trooper Don Wardlaw handled the investigation.
