Willkie Plans Five Day Texas Campaign Tour

Wendell Willkie, 1940 Republican presidential candidate, will spend five days in Texas visiting Houston San Antonio Fort Worth and ending with a statewide rally in Dallas on November 26 He will have breakfasts luncheons dinners receptions and meetings with party leaders and women’s clubs with a major public address at Fair Park Auditorium in Dallas and a Fort Worth football game engagement.

Armadillo Fat Salvage Drives War Effort

Negro extension workers and Boy Scouts met in the District Court room to plan salvaging armadillo fat for the war. Victory Hunting Squads were formed in several communities with the first hunt set for Friday at Branchville led by James E. Booker. C L Redus urged that hundreds of pounds could be saved in the next two months, with oppossums to be hunted after December.

Eugene Knipp Dies from Combat Wounds in North Africa

Corp. Clifton Eugene Knipp aged 59 died in North Africa from injuries received on combat assignment. He served from 1942 with the signal corps in England and North Africa and took part in the first invasion of North Africa. Survived by his wife Lucille, a Houston area family and siblings. the Kamenicky family connection noted in Merced and Glendale.

Poultry and Swine Show Set for Cameron

Negro 4 H Girls and Boys will exhibit chickens and pigs in Cameron on Nov. 27 at the vacant Hefley Stedman lot. Sixteen pens of White Plymouth Rock birds shown by eight of ten girls. over 50 pigs shown by county 4 H boys. Prizes funded by Sear Roebuck Texas Extension Service with five gifts for essay winners and a male pig for a sixth. Some pigs may be sold at the show. Eggs demonstrated and 500 chicks donated by local business and civic groups support 4 H projects and county contests.

Thanksgiving Day publication and plant closure notice

No Daily Midget will be published Thanksgiving Day. The Herald plant will be closed all day as in years past. The plant resumes Friday, November 26 for business as usual. The city is generally expected to be closed on Thanksgiving Day for many years.

The annual Union Thanksgiving service will be held Wednesday night at 7 43 at the Christian Church. Rev K RB Isbel pastor Methodist Church will deliver the address. Music will be given by choirs from the several churches in Cameron. Attendees from Cameron churches are urged to attend.

Broom Corn Grown On Sharp Farm

The Herald displays broom corn grown at Sharp on Fritz Pfannsteil’s farm. He planted one tenth of an acre and produced about 40 pounds of dry straw. The largest broom corn growth seen here suggests broom corn or straw can be grown successfully in the county.

Frank H. Kuhn Dies in Marlin Hospital at 54

Frank H. Kuhn, 54, Milam county resident and Rosebud merchant, died Friday November 19 1948 in Marlin Hospital after a brief illness. He was a grocery merchant and landowner active since 1919, brother to Joe Kuhn Cameron and Mrs Owen Weems Cameron, survived by his widow two daughters Mrs Weldon Walker Los Angeles and Miss Rosalie Kuhn Rosebud. W D Bigbee returns to Cameron after sixteen months with an engineering firm for the United States navy in Porto Rico.
