Library records show Cameron Public Library memorials have grown to almost 100 dollars since July 1 with Sustaining Membership fund drive contributions over 600 dollars since last week. Rotarians History Club Fleur-de-lis and other members support the project as part of community giving.
Rogers Community Service Club officials announced the annual Pecan Show is canceled this year due to the poor pecan crop in the area. Clayton Clovers outlined the local Boy Scout finance drive and presented materials to captains while Gene Butler of the Heart of Texas Boy Scout Council spoke on council work benefiting area scouts.
James Cunningham Jr of Waco pleaded guilty in Milam District Court to swindling by worthless check. He received a two year probated sentence after restitution to N W Boyles for a series of hot checks dated March 31, 1961. District Judge WC Wallace presided.
The Cameron Jr. High team led 8-0 after 3:22 of the first quarter as Yoe-Yoes rushed the A and M Consolidated punter, blocking a snap that went over his head. Bill Goeke recovered the ball for a safety and later scored on a run to extend the advantage. Donald Manley made a quick tackle and scored two points.
Rockdale meets Lockhart at 7 30 p m Friday in the ISAA District 20 AA bi district playoff. Rockdale uses its heavy offense to overwhelm the Yoemen despite Lockhart's noted defense.
Thorndale Chamber of Commerce announces Christmas activities with Santa in the business district on December 7 and 11, plus a home decoration contest, window guessing, and a prize drawing. Rockdale clinched the District 19AA title with a 9-1 season, aided by quarterback Dickie Summers’ two second quarter TD passes and a third quarter TD pass to Ronnie Seelke. Elgin upset Lockhart 30-0 in a key game. Tickets for the playoff at Rockdale High School are on sale, with a capacity crowd expected Friday night.
Cameron Parents Teachers Association outlines a December book fair for December 5 6 and 7 with displays in all three schools. Parents book night on December 6 invites attendees to purchase gifts and foster reading habits among children.
The Rev. J. N. Foreman, former Texas corrections chaplain and Rockdale pastor, discussed the Point Incentive Program for 12,000 inmates at a joint Rotary-Lion Thanksgiving luncheon in The Texan Western Room. He described a 80 point parole system, education up to high school diploma, work training, and religious services, noting 45 percent are under 21 and many gain reading skills and a new outlook. Program aims to place inmates back into society with work opportunities and acceptance.
About 35 members attended the Cameron Booster Club gathering at the Yee High Agriculture building. The group voted to meet on the first and third Mondays of December January and February during the basketball season and urged all members to attend meetings and basketball games.
Mr and Mrs W E Obermiller and Mr and Mrs Eddie Huntsman in Dallas for a dinner honoring Congressman Olin Teague who received a veteran affairs plaque. Obermiller is a national service officer for the Disabled American Veterans and Huntsman is commander of the local DAV chapter. The event was hosted by four Dallas DAV chapters with several congressmen present.
The Full Gospel Church in Buckholts announces three Thanksgiving services this weekend starting Friday at 7 15 p m and ending Sunday night. Evangelist Jimmy Stewart and Mrs Stewart of Dallas conduct Sunday’s 2 30 to 4 30 p m session as the congregation dedicates the new church led by Pastor A Z Fuller who invites all to attend.
Mr and Mrs Coleman Duncum attended a Dallas reception and awards dinner hosted by John Deere at the Sheraton Hotel Ballroom. They were recognized for 1962 sales achievements as Duncum Implement Company won a tractor sales award for meeting and exceeding district quotas.
Cameron officials report fifteen entries registered for the annual Christmas Parade on Friday November 30. Float entries include Pack No 88 Cub Scouts Pleasure and Profit Club Trinity Lutheran Progressive Baptist Bethel AME churches bands Yee High School Jane O J Thomas School bands and riding clubs from Cameron and Davilla. Cash prizes will be awarded for best floats with Santa at the end greeting Milam County youngsters at the Courthouse.
A Shetland pony will be awarded to a lucky attendee during the Little Jewel Jambo ree event at Simon George Hall on November 30. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors pancake supper from 5:30 PM, stage show at 8 PM, and the pony draw during the program. Proceeds fund We come to Cameron signs at Cameron highway entrances.
Joseph A. Terrell 87 of Killeen died at the scene when his daughter driving a 1957 Chevrolet lost control on a rain soaked US 190 and rolled twice near Maysfield. Jessie Terrell Dasher 59, also of Killeen, suffered non life threatening injuries. Dosher treated at St. Edward Hospital. Terrell’s funeral held in Waco.
City Council approves an ordinance creating Cameron Civil Defense program with 10 commissioners led by the mayor. Mayor Duncum notes a two day Austin seminar by State Civil Defense and federal partners. Also approves a new traffic signal at Travis and West Fourth and seeks no parking signs on West Fourth. Sewer line work totaling 1,020 feet underway on North Colfax and other sections with water main planning on Sixth Street and EB Seventh Street.
Funeral services for Mrs Mamie Brady Zellner 65 who died Monday in a local hospital were held Wednesday at First Methodist Church with Rev C A West and Rev Calvin Beckendorf officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. She was born in Maysfield and lived in Cameron most of her life and was a member of First Methodist Church and secretary at St. Edward Hospital. Survivors include two brothers W E Rady of Dallas and Owen Brady of San Francisco and two sisters Mrs John Thweatt of Maysfield and Mrs Viola Peel of Corpus Christi. Marekl Burns Funeral Home handled arrangements.
County Agent J D Moore announced a County Program Building Committee to develop total resource development in Milam County. A Technical Action Committee led by Henry Ivey will gather background information from Alva Sanders Wayne Mann and Moore to inform local and state groups. The effort targets nine study areas including geography labor resources family living health government and industry.
A fire at the Jack Prescott residence 710 E Seventh St caused about 10000 dollars in damage after an unknown arsonist struck a corner of the two story home Tuesday night. Prescott and his family escaped as Cameron volunteer firefighters battled the blaze for about an hour.
Funeral services for Feaster H. Scarborough 60 were held November 17 at First Baptist Church with Hoy A F Russell officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. Scarborough a lifelong Milam County resident born in the Ad Hall Community was a farmer rancher Milam County Farm Bureau director and ASC Committeeman. Surviving are his wife four sisters and pallbearers listed.
