FFA District Leadership Contests Held at Yoe High Cameron

FFA teams from Yoe High won or placed in five of six events at the district leadership contests held November 20 at the Yoe Vocational Building. Buckholts and Rockdale teams also earned top finishes. First and second place teams advance to the area contest November 24 at Blinn College in Brenham. Cameron will enter one team in Senior Chapter Conducting.

Christmas Bazaar At First Christian Church

A Christmas bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday December 1 at the First Christian Church. Lovely handmade gifts and home Christmas decorations will be sold along with pies cakes and candy. Lunch will be served featuring chili hot dogs pie and coffee.

Test Holes For Filter Plant Foundation Dug

Three test holes were contracted at $100 each to assess blue shale depth for the filtration plant foundation. H. O. Witt received the contract. One and seven tenths acres were purchased from Edgar Plemper of Caldwell, adjoining 2.5 acres of city property, near the river. The property known as the old John Crawford home place cost $6 500. A soils expert, with Engineer Joe Rady, was to assess subsurface structure for foundation fitness.

410 Gauge Shotgun Slays Snakes at Elm Creek

Clifford Ray Joshlin an O J Thomas student displayed an 11 and a 12 rattler pair slain with a .410 gauge shotgun on Elm Creek banks Monday morning. The event surprised as snakes are usually hibernating this time of year. Photos of the boy and snakes will run in The Herald next week.

City hikes water rates with sale of improvement bonds

City council approved selling 375000 in water and sewer improvement bonds with bids opened December 18 and bonds sold January 15. The Cameron water bill will rise February 1. A 56300 grant toward a Cameron sewage disposal plant may be awarded, with work to begin within four months of grant receipt. Plans include 5200 feet of 16 inch raw water main from the river to the plant site and to the water basin. Proposals for a garbage body were deferred while other system improvements proceed.

Parachute Jumps Set For Sunday At Rogers Air Field

Two parachute jumps occurred Sunday afternoon November 18 at Rogers Air Field Cameron by a Fort Hood jumper. Officials plan more jumps Sunday November 25 with observers admitted free. Pilot for first jump Rev Cox. second jump by Harry Rogers II. A twin engined plane lands at the field Tuesday November 20, owned and operated by the Walled Lake Door Company.

Freight Rate Reductions Reach Stock Feeders via Drought Area

Governor Shivers designates Milam County Judge Charles Smith Jr to issue certificates enabling hay and roughage buyers to receive interstate freight rate reductions. The program extends benefits to feeders beyond Farmers Home Administration approved participants, with forms available at the Cameron County Judge’s office.

County Auto Dealers Banding Together For Better Service

Jerry Schiller of Cameron Dodge Plymouth will dedicate one day weekly starting Friday November 23 to head a membership drive for factory authorized new car and truck dealers. He chairs Milam County units of the National Automotive Dealers Association and the Texas Automotive Dealers Association. The basic aim is to serve the public by promoting reputable authorized retail outlets that back their products and service work.

4 H Club Congress Broadcasts From Chicago November Event

Radio and television programs from Chicago during the National 4 H Club Congress on November 25 2 include 4 H members. Some Texas youths may appear. Listings will show time and stations.

North Milam United Fund Drive set for December dates

North Milam County United Fund, a non profit group led by Wiley Loughmiller, plans a December drive from the 3rd through the 14th aiming to raise 13 634 for nine community causes. Contributions guide salaried and self employed donors with suggested giving rules to share the load across Scouts, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Heart Fund, Cancer Fund, Library Fund and local charities.

Ladies' Group Sets Party Date in Cameron

Cameron Home Demonstration Club met Tuesday with Mrs. Frank Richter Sr. as hostess. Members made tiered trays and planned the Christmas party to be held Wednesday December 19. Two visitors attended. 15 members were present. Refreshments included Angel fruit cake jello with whipped cream cakes and coffee.

Night Chase Across Counties Ends With Capture

Cameron police and Highway Patrol pursued a hit-and-run suspect across multiple towns, coordinating via radio from south of Cameron to intersecting highways. After about two hours and 150 miles, authorities trapped the violator and took him into custody, Night Chief Brandenburg stating it was a hard chase but they finally caught him.

University High Trojans Edge Yeomen For 1956 AAA Title

The University High Trojans defeated the Yeomen 14 to 7 to claim the District AAA championship. Key moments included a 39 yard Yeomen touchdown by Warren Rinn, two Trojan scores in the third and late in the game, and several fumbles by the Yeomen that shifted momentum. Punters Jesse Kirk and Cameron’s team defense contributed throughout the hard fought contest.

Final home game receipts totaled 937.15 with 108 for University High of Waco travel and 88.90 in officials costs. Net to Cameron was 370.17 and the visitors received 370.17 plus a district championship, totaling 740.35 split.

Harry Hinton's Funeral Held

Harry Hinton 30 of Houston died November 13 after an automobile accident. Funeral services were held November 15 at Marek Burns Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Aubrey Russell. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Born April 4 1926 in Lubbock he was a Yee High School graduate and World War II veteran. Survivors include his widow Billie Hinton mother Estelle Hinton and sister Jane Larson, all of Houston.
