The Herald marks its 100th year with Lloyd Albertson leading a Centennial survey of Milam County. Microfilm research from 1895 and help from Milam Countians, businesses, and organizations support a high point history of Cameron and The Herald, with hope for more pages.
The Red Cross bloodmobile comes to Cameron on Wednesday November 23 from noon to 6 p m. at the Methodist Fellowship Hall to collect 70 pints of blood. Richard Moseley Cameron blood chairman urges volunteers noting higher demand during Thanksgiving and Christmas travel. Milam County has met quotas in recent visits but a definite pint total is required to ensure blood availability.
Supt. C. D. Holmes of the Vanderbilt Independent School District will meet Cameron Public Schools faculty at 4 p.m. Monday in Ben Milam cafeteria. Vanderbilt schools pioneered a faculty centered guidance program and have had one since 1953. Holmes is a Texas authority whose program is a model for others. Cameron Supt. Earl Knebel invites interested parents and citizens to attend. Prof. E. V. Walton of Texas A&M, teaching a guidance course, helped schedule Holmes. Knebel says interested people may still enroll in Walton's course.
Graveside services were held for James Alan Barron 17 days old at Oak Hill Cemetery. He died in Hillcrest hospital Waco. Rev Aubrey Russell officiated with marek Burns Funeral Home directing. Survivors include his parents grandparents and brother John Earl Barron.
Coach Jack Larimore discussed Yee High basketball prospects at the Cameron Quarterback Club final meeting. Members reviewed footage of Yee A and M Consolidated football, heard season reflections from VHS coaches, and Bill Bates offered tips to strengthen the athletic program with thanks for club support.
Rose Mary Matula, senior at Yee High School, was crowned Homecoming Queen during halftime of the Cameron A M Consolidated game. Floats from all four classes highlighted the parade with themes of Progress Through the Ages and various symbols of growth and history.
Yee High School class of 1950 marks its tenth anniversary with a reunion on Saturday at 7 p m in the Homemaking Department venue.
Cameron officials announce a Santa Parade on December 8. The Cameron Housing Authority releases the 1960 fiscal year operating figures showing monthly income per unit of 17.44 with vacancies, collection losses of 105.97, and 50 units paying 883.56 in lieu of taxes to the City. Total payments since July 1958 amount to 2068.59. The authority sets aside 10 percent of rent for city funds. Assets total 549177.50 with land and equipment valued at 532358.18 and liabilities at 519403.60. Surplus stands at 29773.90. Directors include Caperton, Curtis, Hannon, Kunz, Liebman. George McGehee is executive director.
Robert H Lawrence of the Texas Bureau for Economic Understanding spoke to Cameron Rotary Lions and Kiwanis groups at The Texan and to Milano Thorndale High School students. Accompanied by County Supt H D Maxwell he outlined ideological issues in the US USSR era and Texas heritage programs.
Cameron Chamber expects a record turnout for the annual Christmas parade at 4 p.m. on December 8 in downtown Cameron led by Santa Claus who will meet Milam County youngsters after the procession. About 50 floats and units are planned with cash prizes for the top four entries and merchant support for December Thursday hours.
Police chief says a prowler eluded a coordinated effort by State Trooper Jack Straley Deputy Sheriff Douglas Barron and others in the 1000 block of North Fannin. Residents report prowlers near Eighth and Seventh Streets amid linked store break ins. J T Gates 34 formerly of Gause confessed to burglaries at Safeway and Irving's Dept Store.
Cameron ministers plan a united Thanksgiving observance at 7 p.m. Wednesday November 23 at Batetown Baptist Church. The sermon will be by Rev. Jewel Strong of First Methodist. invocation by Rev. E H Bradfield of First Assembly. music led by Francis Cox.
A 6:30 a m crash on November 9 at the Bowie Street intersection caused about 150 damage to two cars. Napoleon Ellison, 19, of 902 Rusk, and Elmo Manners, 28, of 811 W Gillis, were the drivers in the only accident in the past eight days.
The official Milam County General Election tallies show 5720 ballots cast. Presidential results list Kennedy Johnson 3640 and Nixon Lodge 1499 with 5556 counted. Senate Johnson 33 and Tower 0. Lieutenant Governor Leu led with 5720 valid votes. four constitutional amendments show varying for and against counts.
The Cameron School Board bought a heater for C. J. Thomas School and 35 desk chairs for Ada Henderson School. They hired Otto Schulz to fill a temporary vacancy and approved library books, science references, a later daily start, earlier bus pickup, band letter jackets, and basket rack improvements at Yoe Gymnasium.
