In Cameron final tabulations show 437 for Roosevelt and a small turnout of 557 registered voters. Amendments carried overall. liquor business failed 191 to 229 with 226 for Teacher Fund, 240 to 172 for Workmen's Compensation, 504 to 125 for Salaries, and 296 to 118 for Limiting Representatives.
H. H. Stedman departed Cameron on Wednesday night to join a special train of Ford dealers bound for the Detroit factory. He plans to return to Cameron within a week.
Milam County reported Roosevelt leading with 142 votes to Landon 6 in 24 precincts. Judge Kemp estimated Roosevelt would reach 4000 and Landon 175 countywide, while weather kept many away. All amendments passed except the proposal to place state control on the liquor business.
During National Apple Week Herald sponsors first prize to Piggly Wiggly Store in Cameron led by W. T. Whatley. Second prize goes to B. F. Stewart Grocery. Pacific Northwest Fruits offers fifteen dollar first prize and ten dollar second prize for best displays featuring Big Y Skookum and Diamond Apples. National Apple Week runs from October 21 to November.
Criminal District Attorney Emory B Camp moved the Hill case to a fixed trial date in Austin as doctors report Mrs Hill ill in a Temple hospital and Erskine Hill cannot attend. Hill was previously convicted in December 1935 and jailed for 99 years after a jury misconduct reversal. the state sought the death penalty.
Roosevelt earns 523 electoral votes to Landon 8 in a landslide across 48 states except Maine and Vermont. The Democratic win signals a decisive shift to New Deal policies with major gains in New York Pennsylvania Ohio Illinois Iowa Indiana and California. Garner votes early in Texas as Roosevelt reaches a record majority.
Interest in the steamboat landing celebration is high as descendants of Milam County pioneers plan to attend. The Oxsheer family of the first district clerk is among participants, with Mrs. H F Smith and others, plus George and Pearl Green Clement, descendants of Col. George Green, and Wilton relatives from across the state. The event features a history of the Washington’s landing and a return voyage with a dance at the Chance home on the Brazos.
R G Grabein of Grabein Chevrolet Co says the 1937 Chevrolet will be shown in Cameron on Saturday November 7. The article notes many body design changes and recalls Chevrolet's 1936 sales leadership.
The Coleman Furniture Company announces a grand opening on Saturday November 7 with a sweeping stock reduction sale in Cameron. The White Sales Company of Waco runs the sale designed to clear merchandise with prices far below cost and savings of ten to 33 percent or more. visitors are urged to attend opening day for the deepest discounts and broad selection.
Friends report Nancy Newton is improving rapidly after last week's operation for appendicitis performed by her father Dr. W R Newton. She plans to return to school at California Lane Academy soon.
