A casual weather and sports note describes a rainy Wednesday and Yoemen football teams with two games left. Coach Kirk warns any outcome is possible and anticipates an upset by Caldwell or Rockdale. Also notes a new comic strip Those Were The Days joining Herald features.
Milam County voters favored six of ten constitutional amendments on Tuesday but not the same six as the statewide majority. Amendment No 4 sought four year terms for the governor and other offices but failed statewide. district results show mixed local support with several amendments passing.
World Community Day will be observed in Cameron at 3 p.m. Friday Nov. 5 at First Christian Church. Rev Douglas K E Meyer of Hearne one of 17 ministers and laymen chosen for a tour funded by the General Board of Christian Social Concerns will be speaker. The trip aimed to study social problems and promote peace with the theme The Laitys Mission in World Affairs. The United Church Women will collect material for Chile and a nursery will be available during the service.
A Monroe Cor bin Texaco Station in Cameron near 1 p.m. was struck by an explosion that shattered a window and searched the pavement outside. Sheriff Carl Black said the blast came from a small hand grenade believed given by Tucker of Jones Prairie to an antique gun dealer from Templeman. Tucker said the grenade was in his car and he had no idea it was explosive. No charges were filed after Sheriff Black investigated.
Yee High Class of 1949 plans its first reunion at Cameron Country Club during Homecoming weekend. Registration at 7 p.m. precedes a dinner and dance with 75 expected. out of town alumni include Neill Horstmann and Dr. Raymond Lesikar among others.
A door to door Red Cross fund drive is planned in Cameron on Thursday November 11 to raise five thousand dollars for North Milam County. Cameron church women will conduct the drive led by James B D Camp with area drives also under way. Funds support the blood program including bloodmobile visits and maintaining a Red Cross office in Rockdale for military leave processing and national disaster relief.
Cameron Independent School District gains approval from the Texas Education Agency for a 124,869 Title I grant to aid educationally deprived children. The program funds 27 special aides across CISD and St. Anthony School in eight grades, plus teacher aides, a visiting teacher, and a program nurse, with a total 74,769 payroll and 142,000 program support through October 1 retroactivity.
Cameron Yeemen prepare for homecoming with a 5 30 p m bonfire at the old baseball park north of Cameron and a 7 20 p m game between Yoe High and Caldwell, followed by dances for students and alumni. Caldwell aims for a district win as Coach Morris Stone names a probable starting lineup. Queen candidates and escorts listed. ceremonies to crown the Homecoming Queen at halftime Friday. Jaycees and student groups plan dances at National Guard Armory and Ben Milam Cafetorium with The Castaways providing music.
Rev. BK. RB. Martinez and the First Mexican Baptist Church in Cameron earned first place in the Baptist Church Development Program of Texas at the Southern Baptist state convention in Houston. The church marked its 40th anniversary and pursued projects in “Toward a Better Church, Community and World.” Martinez stated the group was moved to complete long-undone tasks and accomplished the things they believed they could.
The Cameron PTA will gather at 7 30 p m in Ben Milam Auditorium. Felix Matula leads the program What Scouting Means To Me outlining scouting’s value to students and families.
Cameron merchants announce a street circus with hourly shows from 1 AM and a 6 PM combined act featuring two trained elephants a serial act and a trapeze act. Rides exhibits elephant cart for 30 people wild animal and reptile displays pony rides airplane kiddie car rides. Coupons worth 10 cents per ride available at Chamber of Commerce.
Cameron hosts a fly in breakfast as Mayor Basse Wilson unveils plans for the Cameron Municipal Airport. About 20 planes from Killeen area expected to arrive Sunday morning with breakfast at 9 a.m. at the Star Lite.
Rosebud residents vote November 6 to accept the Burlington School District indebtedness and annex Burlington to Rosebud. Milam County Trustees approved annexation September 7. Burlington students already attend Rosebud High School. The move adds about $5,000 yearly to Rosebud’s budget while maintaining Burlington taxes.
