Milam County Cotton Crop Falls Behind Harvest

Milam County has gathered 46,091 bales of cotton as of October 18 from the 1926 crop, with rains delaying harvest. Texas counties ahead of Milam include San Patricio Ellis Williamson Hidalgo McLennan Nueces and Cameron. The estimate foresees a 70,000 bale county crop, about 50,000 bal es vin ned by November 1, and roughly 20,000 bales remaining to be gathered if the 70,000 figure stands.

Milam County Fiddlers Broadcast Thrills Radio Land

The Big Four fiddlers from Milam County Uncle Mike James Tom Choate J L Clinton and T A Howell delighted Radio Land from Waco station with a 30 minute program. Mrs Howell Ray Mabry Will Schiller and other music helped. fans nationwide sent telegrams and long distance calls. The broadcast led to promises of a return engagement and thanks to Edgar Wilson for organizing the event.

Court to appoint Constable and count ballots cast

Judge Leff T. Kemp ordered a commissioners court meeting for Monday. The court will appoint a constable at Jones Prairie to replace the late R. H. Jones. J. E. Lester is likely chosen after votes written on the ballot by county voters following Jones’s death. About 2000 votes were cast in the county last Tuesday.

In a light turnout general election fewer than 2000 votes were cast countywide with the Democratic ticket winning by an overwhelming margin. Cameron led the Democrats with 35 votes, Republicans totaling 3. Rockdale yielded Moody 159 and Hymes 12 votes. Forty-eight boxes returned to county judge Kemp by Wednesday night, indicating most amendments passed with strong majorities.

Ballot Nominee Jones Dies Before Election Day

The ballot listed Mr Jones as the party nominee for office and he died on Sunday before Tuesday’s election. Mr Lester received 103 votes and is expected to be named constable by the court on Monday to appoint and canvass the results.
