Governor Dolph Briscoe announced a 10000 grant to Hill Country Community Action Association Inc San Saba under Title II of a 1974 act. The CFNP funds support emergency food vouchers for Mills Llano San Saba Mason Hamilton Lampasas Coryell Bell Milam counties, food stamp outreach nutrition education prenatal vitamins and care, and training to build food banks and hunger centers.

New Cancer Information Service Launches in Milam County
A public cancer information program named the Cancer Information Service offers a toll free line 1 800 392 2040 to provide current facts on cancer prevention and early detection. The service, part of a Texas education effort led by MD Anderson with Red Cross and ACS, operates 8am to 5pm weekdays and is funded by the National Cancer Institute. Rep Dan Kubiak will speak at a Lions Club barbecue on Monday night November 1 at O J Thomas School cafeteria starting 6pm.

Wet Highway Blamed for Three Mishaps on 77
Wet pavement caused three accidents on Highway 77 between Ben Arnold and Burlington, with no serious injuries. An empty Denver truck driven by James Vernon rolled over Thursday at 10:45 a.m. He was treated and released from St. Edward Hospital in Cameron. Two Friday incidents followed within an hour, all blamed on slick pavement.

Fire ant survey seeks Milam County samples
Georgetown Extension entomologist Robert E Glodt Jr asks Milam County residents to send ant samples for a study. Collectors should use tweezers place specimens in alcohol and bring them to the Cameron Extension office with name address phone location infested percent of area and at least five large ants per jar.

Thorndale Independent School District sets a second bond election for November 9 with a $500,900 request to build a new elementary school and bond hall. Polls are open 7 am to 7 pm in the band hall. a June proposal for $995,000 including a gym was rejected 4 to 1.

Social Security earning bases to rise in 1977
Beginning January 1 1977 the maximum earnings count for social security will increase to 16500 from 15300. The annual limit for benefits will rise to 3000 with part time earnings reducing benefits. Full monthly benefits stay available if wages stay below 250 and self employment is not substantial.
