Lampasas courthouse books rain down spark public interest

Old law books and ledgers rained from a third floor window at the Lampasas county courthouse drawing a crowd as state archivists scanned the materials. Historical Society members arrived quickly while West Rosebud and Ratibor incidents also appear in the scene.

Dress Code Reviewed at May Meeting in McGregor District

McGregor school district voters approved $1 million in bonds for school improvement by a 54 percent margin with 953 votes cast last Saturday. Taxes will rise about fifty percent to fund the bond issue, amid debate over whether the code applied to all including players and board members’ kids.

Rockdale Threatens Rural Fire Service Over County Help

At the Thursday Commissioners Court Rockdale city manager Earnie Moore warned rural residents could lose fire and ambulance service without county aid. He cited Rockdale’s $140,000 in county taxes supporting about $81,000 in county funds and services, plus $7,889 last year for rural fire fighting and $800 annually paid by the county. Uncollected ambulance fees totaled $5,300 for out-of-town service in 1974-75. The county judge said funds rely on taxes and fees and warned cities may borrow via FHA bonds. he cited fuel for road projects and noted no tax increases. Other business included a bid to Audis Lovelady for a collapsed tank car at $1.75 per cwt and a study of a late-hours bar request at Milano. An information presentation on the Central Counties Center for Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services noted a six-county area including Milam, with up to 230 admissions a month across emergency, outpatient, partial hospitalization, inpatient, residential, and consultative services.

Receipts High at Cameron Livestock Auction Bid Prices Rise

Receipts topped 1300 at Cameron Livestock Auction, up from 833 last week and 525 a year ago. Slaughter cows and bulls edged higher, feeder steer prices steady with some 1 premium, calf values mixed, demand strong for feeders. Hog sale saw 554 head with barrows and gilts up 50 to 75 cents, sows down a dollar. barrows 45.70 to 46.10, sows 32.50 to 36.50.

Rogers High School honors graduates with top list

Rogers High School released its top graduates for the upcoming Tuesday May 27 graduation. Valedictorian Cecilia Green, daughter of Randolph and Mrs Green, posted a 96.58 average, with salutatorian Henry Skala Jr., son of Henry Skala Sr., at 95.12. Other honorees include Faye Zovodny and Debbie Zovodny among 10 names.

Milam Oil Production and Folk Fete Highlight Cameron Mention

Milam County reports 1974 oil output reaching 6.78 million barrels, with Scurry County leading Texas in production at 94.2 million. Cameron Folk Fete plans a June 5 queen contest in Cameron with 15 to 19 year old Milam County entrants, talent judging, prizes, and a parade float. Texas overall shows a 1974 crude total under 1.3 billion barrels, about 39.4 percent of U.S. production, amid ongoing declines in state output. A Cameron fire scare on N Fannin was extinguished. it was steam from a wet roof.

Three-Band Concert Set Thursday At Yoe Field

Three school bands will perform Thursday May 22 at 7 p.m. in Yoe High Stadium, showcasing the year’s work. Beginner, junior high, and high school bands present familiar pieces, varied selections, and UIL tunes, with a weather backup to the gym.
