Milam County men form Third Texas Cavalry troop

Troop D of the Third Texas Cavalry is organized with 120 Milam county volunteers under Captain Walton D. Taylor of Waco. Major H. R. Clark administered the oath in Cameron as the unit prepares for drills at an armory and eventual transfer to Camp Mabry for training before duty on the Mexican border.

Commercial Club Directors Meeting Discusses Sprinkler Funds and Civic Projects

The Commercial Club held a lively meeting with 17 officers and directors present. A special committee reported fundraising for a sprinkler fell short, with promises totaling only 75 to 90 dollars. a board of equalization was suggested and Lawrence declined further duty. A bid for the sprinkler was discussed. no action taken. Committee reports on cement crossing and gravel at Terry Pit were noted, with Civic Improvement oversight assigned and Good Roads updates from Judge Gillis.

Burlington Chautauqua Opens With Strong Patriotic Program

The Burlington Chautauqua starts next Saturday May 18 and runs three days. The Meneley Chautauqua company provides attractions this year presenting a patriotic program. Organizers report good advance ticket sales and expect large crowds on all three days.

Red Cross War Fund Appeal Urges Milam County to Give

To the People of Milam County Texas urges support for the Red Cross War Fund campaign for one hundred million dollars in war relief. Milam County and nearby towns are assigned a ten thousand dollar quota with campaign dates from the 20th to the 27th. Contributions may be cash pledges or Liberty Bonds, supporting civilians and soldiers in allied and enemy territory.

Chautauqua to Open in Cameron with Varied Program

R L Lee of Redpath-Horner visited Cameron to announce readiness for the annual Chautauqua. The weeklong lineup includes music, lectures, drama, and a Red Cross nurse talk with prices from 25 to 50 cents. The big event runs May 26 through the seventh day with acts from Eve Anderson Company Edna Means Lieut E H Lougher and The Marr Entertainers among others.
